well, apparently this file should be included with your installation disks. Maybe you can check out your installation disks to see if you can find the file there. Otherwise, based on my research surrounding this file, you should switch operating systems and use at least Win2k or WinXP

I just got help from someone and I just need this file: cwdaudio.wcm. If anyone has it, e-mail it to me (ringodoggie@yahoo.ca). It should be in C:\Windows\

Won't open how? It doesn't do anything, or says it can't find the program? If it just can't be found, you probably only need to copy it from the install CD (use Add/Remove Components). Otherwise it's probably time to reinstall.

at this point, not sure what else you can do short of reinstalling win98--or using a different sound card.

Have you tried looking at volume control (sndvol32) and seeing if the Master Volume is mute?

I have Hewlett Packard Vectra v400, and I tried everything and still no sound.

What type/manufacturer of an onboard sound card do you have ?
If you don't know, put down the case and search for the chip, like ES-1371 for a Creative Labs onboard chip; usually it should be recognized immediately when started up in Windows and got to the desktop.
Maybe the card even was disabled in the BIOS.
So restart, go into the BIOS (press F2, DEL or another key right after start, when the RAM counts up; depends from BIOS manfuacturer what to press) - the neccessary key usually is mentioned below at the bottom line.

The thing is, you need the mainboard drivers and not external drivers, so check your mainboard model, go to the manufacturer's homepage and download the most recent sound drivers and install them ...

have you tried the "add hardware wizard" option in the control panel? there, i believe you can manually install drivers there.

I have an onboard sound card, but Device Manager can't find it.

Do you have onboard sound or an external sound card ?
If you have onboard sound and wanted to install an external sound card, go into the BIOS right after start and disable the audio device, it might be a conflict then.

If you don't have onboard sound or it is already deactivated:
Remove that PCI Multimedia Device entry from the device manager and restart. Windows should recognize that again. Make sure, you are using the right drivers; if that doesn't work, download the driver beforehand and put it somewhere (if zipped, extract them into a folder or put them on a disk/CD-ROM).

Usually you should install the drivers right after you put in the PCI card and Windows recognized it after showing the dektop ("PCI Multidedia Device" means, Windows doesn't recognized the exact model) - if that doesn't work, try installing these when the desktop loaded correctly and restart.

So, basically--you have no sound and can't find anything related to sound in the device manager? Maybe you could give screenshot of what you see in your device manager?

I double checked, and you can only set up drivers to devices on the list.

Have you tried to see if you see the sound card in the device manager? or, just try to install the drivers anyways?

What is this 'multimedia device'? A sound card?

...then give me some help because on my new computer I set up a driver for the PCI Multimedia Device. Then later, I shut off my computer, and turned it on later and now Windows doesn't think the driver is set up. I go into system in the control panel, and the device manager, and now PCI Multimedia Device isn't there.
