Emo has been a term used in music since the late 80's. It is in no way an MTV generation word. Most people have never heard emo. Nothing that MTV plays is emo. Dashboard Confessional is bad acoustic rock with simple tabs and shitty lyrics. This website will solve the misunderstanding.

The people who started slinging the term "emo" around for music are as bad and as uneducated in music as those who do not know the distinction/catagorical priotity of Rap/Hip hop.

My favorite emo band is Drive Like Jehu. My second favorite is Fugazi. Both I should point out are very mild emo bands,

Millionth edit: The Get-Up Kids are indie rock.

I wouldn't take Allmusic's labeling as gospel. They also tagged New Found Glory as emo.

Hmmm, interesting.

Well, I guess I don't mind labels too much anyway. Great music is great music and The Get Up Kids are definitely great music.

I belive i read on their site once they didn't consider themselves emo.

i like them a lot. i gots their new cd once it came out. good stuff.

anyway, emo isn't really a genre, its' a lyric style. because emo doesn't nessecarly have to be sad acoustic songs, but it could be screaming with sad lyrics. and not nsesscearly sad lyrics. cause lots of songs are sad lyrics but arne't nessecarly emo.

Arwon, meet MTV.

MTV, meet Viacom.

Viacom, meet your friendly monsterous advertising campaign built around influencing a demographic made mostly out of teens who have little to no musical knowledge or artistic credibility.

Rolling Stone heard of it and tagged Dashboard Confessional (diediedie) emo. Even though it just isn't.

I sure hope not. Then I couldn't honestly say I hate emo anymore.

So, any thoughts?
