Hehe, just put the character encoding to Japanese in Firefox, the symbol for takara seems slightly familiar with the figure on the sail, yes (despite I think on NES the "word" had less lines)
About that trick with that 1UP, I got this sometimes but never could figure out when to get it; I only thought, I needed two requirements:
1.) The second and third digit of time left need to match and
2.) the second one I didn't figure out

At least we know how to get that hidden 1UP now

There's a word on the boat? You mean the letter on the sail on the OW?

I liked the treasure ship bonus in SMB3 (coins are N x11, time has N as middle digit?). Does everyone know that that's the Japanese word for treasure (

So, knuck, you're not so much against the fact that Juggling Joker is bringing this up as you are against the fact that people make "impossible" hacks. If that's the issue, why bother flaming Juggling Joker for bringing up a perfectly valid loophole in which those people may be interested? Why not flame the people actually making the hard hacks?

What you seem to be saying is that people shouldn't have the freedom to control the way that their hack is played. If it's meant to be hard, these loopholes should be known and counteracted so that the intent of the designer is correctly translated into their work. Doesn't that sound fair?
Where did i flame him?
And for god sake, WHEN DID I TOOK OF HIS FREEDOM OF ROMHACKING??
I think you should reread my post.

Hey, cool. I remember SMB3 was loaded with such tricks.
There's also the one where you get a 1up if you hit the goal tape at the highest point. (Now let's see if anyone can do both tricks at the same time. )

I believe that was a 3up, not a 1up. Mwahaha.

Gonna have to agree with the troll on this one, hard hacks blow.

I am constantly pissed off because of you people. So, don't even bother.
And look at the thread subject: Stop players from getting lives.

I don't really have a problem with this. If anyone wants to spend between a few seconds and 1 2/3 minutes waiting by a goal post just for an extra 1-up, Be my guest. Just goes to show they have too much time on their hands.

Yeah! LETS DELETE ALL THE 1UPS USING ASM.
Let's also get rid of the goal points trick by NOT USING THEM. Only one level for the whole hack .</sarcasm>

Certain items always give you a one up, too. Such as baby yoshi.

There is always the trick of carrying an item, such as a turtle shell, through the final goal post. Depending on Mario's state and what's in your item box, you'll either get a 1up or a powerup. Free guys come if you're small or super Mario and have a mushroom in the box, if you're firey Mario with a flower in your box, or if you're caped Mario with a feather in the box. Hope this helps some people.

But does it give you a 1-up, no . But you have to love the classic music.

Ive actually known about this trick for a while, but couldnt figure out how to trigger it . On some of the levels I would play, I would randomly get a 1up... and I was always like .

But there are other tricks for SMW like this one:
If you are in the Special World, wait a few minutes and then the music cnahges to the old SMB Theme with a steel drum version.

Does this apply to the custom goal blocks as well?
(Probably)

No, the time would have to be 255. Notice the 5 repeated. I might have been unclear, which is probably the case.

So what your saying is that if you have say 50 stars and the time is 258 or something, you will get a 1-up? Thtas cool. But Wouldn't it be possible to ASM that out of the game?

If not, you could always create a custom block that reduces your lives down to 1 and set it right where mario enters a level.

If you're one of those hack designers who puts a ton of stock in limiting the amount of lives the player can get without cheating, you might want to brief yourself on this trick I recently discovered. No doubt some of you are already aware, but some of you definitely aren't.

Upon clearing a stage, if your time ends with the same digit as the tens place of your star counter repeated twice (i.e. your timer ending in 33 with 37 stars), you get an extra life. This even works with 0 stars AND using the goal sphere AND on bosses, so now that I think about it, there's no real way to limit this trick except maybe completely abolishing the time limit, which I still am not sure will stop the player from getting the extra life if they meet the requirements.

Just something to be aware of if you don't like divvying out lives left and right. Or if you're pinched for lives in a hard hack and you want to give yourself some legitimate help.
