1. I liked it because it was so... random, you had no idea where you'd end up.
2. It's my choice to like a hack or not... so I really don't need people constantly annoying me about it.

Where's any evidence he hasn't? He may have changed the message box font, and just not gotten to the hud yet.

Im a sucker for the classics. I look forward to this hack. If u can fix the status bar color that will be cool but I don't think I'll care that much.

I like that idea, Frank. One of the SMW hackers ended up with a palette where the coin was silver, along with the numbers, and it made me think how good a SMW game might look with all silver coins.

Why doesn't anyone mess with the game's font? It's kind of boring; someone should add some style.

I'm actually planning to rip the SMAS M3 font in my hack...

I really never gave a shit if the status bar palette was off, actually.

But depending how those colors are used, couldn't someone change the status bar palette to fit the "mood" of a level? It's kinda' like that all-white 1-up mushroom in 6-3 in Super Mario Bros. 3: sure it was the wrong color, but it just plain looked good, and appropriate for that level.

Though having just said that, none of it applies to any of these screenshots, where at best, the colors look completely random.

I don't think so. Those gradients use less than 16 colors, thus they could easily be implemented as tiles. I think that's why "MARIO" looks so bad in a couple of those shots...very similar colors right next to each other.

It's all very nice (do I smell HDMA and CGADSUB? ) but the BG and celing in the castle entrance need to be changed, and some of the scorebars are ugly or unreadable.

The only time it's even vaguely acceptable for a status bar palette problem is if all the tiles in the background use 16 colors. I've yet to see that happen, though, and putting some effort into remapping is not that big of a deal. I've gone out of my way to avoid status bar problems in my hack, everyone else should be doing the same.

I concur. In fact, I was seriously at one point eliminating it altogether as a mockery to those whiners. I mean, 95% of it is redundant. Lives can be seen on the overworld, you can live without time, the bonus tape isn't used in my hack (level endings are SMB3 style) thus eliminating the need for stars, you don't exactly need the item boarder, and score is utterly useless as it isn't saved. Coins is the only thing you need, but even that can go.

1st: Bush Error.

2nd: Funky palette for the background.

3rd: Nice.

4th: I like that little bit on top for some reason...

5th: Good

6th: Funky lantern...

If this is a remake of SMB1, there's a reason to play this rather than the original. The fact that Mario has some abilities in SMW that he doesn't in SMB1.

It's simply a matter of remapping colors elsewhere in the palette, which most people apparently a) don't want to do or b) don't know how to do. I'm certain there are enough available background colors to insert graphics from just about any game without screwing up the status bar (c'mon, it only uses a few colors!). It just takes a little more work.

I think maybe we could find a happy medium about the "status bar" thing. It's not the end of the world, like some people think, but it is still a deal, unlike some others think. If the palette doesn't look random, such status bar changes could be just fine... a certain airship level of another recent hack comes to mind.

Trouble is, here, that the palettes for the status bar look very random. And even worse, the palette for the cave level is difficult to see.

The hack may still be worth playing. I don't know: I wouldn't rule it out. Just basically, I don't think he should be condemned for status bar problems alone, but I don't think he should be celebrated for it either .

Hmm... I just noticed that in the fortress snapshot, there seems to be a problem between the second and third rows of bricks... not sure what's going on there ....

I was going to comment that but, yes, please don't stretch the scroller with those screens. It's bad enough that it is somewhat misleading; false updates can be assumed. It can also slow things down a tad so please, use numbers next time, we're not retarded.

Can you people NOT post each screenshot again? It really stretches the page.

Take a page from Kirby ATW's book.

Comments: Nothing that hasn't been addressed before... but what's up with the crazy amounts of time? As I recall, the original levels weren't upwards of 800 seconds... I don't think... unless I've been mistaken for the past 11 years

*sighs* Am I one of the few people who doesnt care whether or not the status bar "has problems". Its not the end of the world you know.

Lets see...

First shot. Look at your bushes on the right, a few tiles are not in place. Other than that, fine

Second Shot. background is a weird color. Other than that fine.

Third shot. Looks fine.

Fourth shot, looks fine.

Final shot. Lantern is kinda weird, but thats okay.

Anyways, a good compilation of classics is a nice idea

I have to agree. Why recreate a level in a game that can already be played right now? Why get a hack with the levels in there when I own the actual game? Makes no since...

I like the screens, minus a few errors. I don't care about status bar problems, but I know someone is going to go crazy over it.

I love it! Nice job.

The foreground is good, except for a couple of the ceiling bricks being off. Darken that background ^^

Nice, albeit I was never a fan of the disembodied Mario head.

Very neat, but get rid of the background up top.

Awesome! I love the mist. Just make sure you can actually SEE the status bar. I don't really care about pallete.
