I had the same problem. I was so close to the point where I could save, and it forced me to turn it off.

I'll tell you something, It can't be more annoying than Window's Blue Screen of Death.

My old computer was the blue screen of death...

My old motherboard was always making errors, so any errors in any programs don't anny me anymore.

Same here.

Anyway, it's good to know about the memory cards, I do always buy the name-brand, and I let it save normally.

The GC BIOS has to initialize memory cards first, and Nintendo cards have a lock system in which the game has to give it some sort of signal to enable write access, so I wouldn't worry too much unless it crashes while saving or you have an unofficial card.

Once I had similar problems as Hyperhacker, found out it as the controller who wasn't fully inserted.

JJ64: Possible, but that would be a very rare glitch. It's not common thought. The same thing can happen on computer mind you.

HyperHacker: It doesn't do it to me most of the time except when I boot the GC without knowing where my controller his. It is usually under some clothes so the joystick isn't where it's sopposed to be. Oh! And that also happen when I play games with 2 Wavebirds or more, people change frequencies.

It only happens if you boot with the lid open? Weird.
Say, has anyone had a problem where the joysticks on their controllers don't work right? Mine (both controllers, IIRC) are doing it. If I push the joystick at all, it'll sometimes 'stick' (like if I'm writing stuff in Animal Crossing, it'll go quite a bit past the letter I wanted before stopping), also sometimes it acts like I'm holding a certain direction when I'm not. Unplugging it usually doesn't help, only holding X+Y+Start for a few seconds.

I couldn't tell you, but I would have tested it out with a memory card first.

If it did wipe the data, then... yeah. Defective for sure. But if it didn't, then it's more a minor glitch than anything.

I kinda think you're over re-actiing. A screen showing errors is better than games randomly crashing. I'm sure that screen is MEANT to be there in case of errors, not a way to show that the GCN itself is going bad.

Im not overreacting... I just think its kind of weird.

I took it baqck because theres a better chance of keeping my game data safe as opposed to a defective GC.

Can the gamecube erase the memory cards if something was wrong?

If you can still get into the menu... *shrugs*

Personally, I think you could have gotten by without taking it back for an exchange. But whatever suits you.

It just does it when the lid is open. And, I have already returned the GC, i bought it from Best Buy. They have a 4 year replacement plan. The warranty only covers 90 days.

Colin: On a gamecube, if you leave the lid open it should go into the Gamecube BIOS. Where you can setup things. (thought I rather use the "Hold A button" way )

What happens if you try get into the BIOS in the other ways? (like by not having any disc in the gamecube or by holding A when it starts)

You should call the tech support if it bothers you.

Why would you leave the lid open?

I'm a bit confused, but from what you're saying, the system runs fine if you have a game inserted and close the lid before turning the power on.

That didn't happen to you before ?
I don't have a NGC, so I don't know if this happens more often, but if it is something similar like a Windows BSoD, it is weird.

As pointed out, calling the customer service, if you still have warranty on your console, might help you.
At least it doesn't kill your data on your memory cards; but on the other hand you don't know if it may haoppen just when encountering a boss in a hard game; so it should be time to check if a repair would rent (if you don't have warranty anymore; in Germany the minimum warranty usually is two years after buying the device) or if a new GC might be the better choice.
