Thanks for the responses so far. I got a couple of things I'm still wondering. I thought about simply changing the graphics for the blue koopa, but isn't it programmed to kick a shell if it comes across one?

And Aioria, since you used the moles in you hack do you just have the goombas popping out of the ground?

You don't need to sacrifice all the rexes/moles/ what ever thru out the entire game. If you are going to use the koopas with no shell, I recommedn using the blue one because he is the different one. Now just keep kis GFXfile and copy it. Now rename it ExGFX++.bin (++ is a # 80-FFF). Now just replace SP4 or what ever with your ExGFX file. Make sure you changed the look of the koopa so it looks like the goomba. I hope that helps. Thats what I do in my hack for all my levels with custom sprites.

i use monty moles in my hack for the small goombas from smb1, coz the normal goombas have the smb3 graphics. and i maintained the rexes.
but for the goombas of smb1, i prefer using monty moles and making them 'fast goombas'.

... *punches you all* Put them over the koopas for the levels you want them in. It's what KT did, few people noticed because he also included the blue koopa.

The problem there is not getting rid of the fire, but that they jump and are too fast.

I Think You Should Use Small Dino Rhinos, Maybe, maybe you can sacrificee them by making them not to spit fire?

And using Rex Goombas is a bad idea, because the top part of the Rex apparently still remains, just that you can't see it. In other words, you can be smacked by it's sides while trying to jump over it.

Using the hex changing trick changes every single Rex in the game into Goombas, so no, using both "Rex Goombas" and Rexes is impossible, unless you make some kind of ASM bypass...

I'm working on a hack and I want to add the classic goomba. I know the hex code I have to modify to make rex have its properties, but is there an easy way to have the original rex (that takes 2 hits) on some levels and the goomba (that takes 1 hit) on other levels? In other words, do I have to sacrifice the original rex throughout the entire game to use the goomba?
