Thats because the PNG I saved recently with the good color is uploaded to the exact same url as the old crappy png. So Erk, what your seeing is what I wanted.

The GIMP preserves colour as long as you don't set the bit depth lower than the original. That's all I can say.

In Photoshiop, whenever you want to save something in GIF, JPG or PNG, use the "Save for Web" feature, it lets you preview the image and filesize while you set the image quality (or color depth, etc.) ... that always worked for me

But otherwise there's Paint Shop Pro, it does a pretty good job too ...

The exact problem is that ut just suffers major loss of colour. It's something to do with the palette.

Looking at that sprite it's hard to tell what exactly the problem is, due to them having different backgrounds. I notice some oddities in the shadow, though. Maybe you should switch those 'Dot Gain 20%' options to 'none', if there's that option.

I use Photoshop, but I've never saved anything in .png form yet. What *exactly* is happening to that sprite? It's hard to tell.

Well, Fyxe, it looks fine to me, and anyway, that background is long gone now. Please post here only if you know what I need to do, I want to get this problem fixed badly, but in the meantime, GIF is a decent alternative.

Gb boy, may I make a suggestion?

Please make your layout background into a .gif or a .png file. OR, save it as a maximum quality .jpg file. At the moment, it suffers from *extreme* blurring and looks rather ugly. The difference will be appreciated.

Uneless I'm using animations (animated PNGs -> MNG; animated GIFs -> GIF ()), because MNG still is no match for animated GIFs (), I'm using PNG since a longer time due to its better qualities with less space

And the transparency issue in the first post is very weird. PNG has far better properties than GIF, only to mention the support of one alpha-channel, semi-transparency and such (except my post background image maybe, but I'm too lazy to rip the title screen new just now )

I usually use the default PNG optimizer settings in my PSP7, unless I'm working with really large files which should turn out smaller from file size.

Then use Paint Shop Pro, it's better IMO, but I don't do any really advanced image editing anyway.

PNG Optimizer? That's not a feature in Photoshop, is it? Thats what I'm trying to do, save it in Photoshop.

Edit: I reinstalled the program, and the same thing still happens. This is really pissing me off!

That might be because Paint saves them as 16 bit PNGs IIRC.

That's a 256 colour PNG with little to no colour loss.

It's definitely a saving option. Could it have something to do with here?

Or here?

Ironically, these are PNGs. However, they are saved in MS Paint, and they look fine.

It's the saving option, I don't know about photoshop but in Paint Shop Pro you can export as PNG and then you can select some different ways to reduce colours and such, all my my PNGs are elite.

UPDATE

Well I saved a snapshot in ZSNES, as a BMP. So obviously it opened it paint. I converted the BMP to PNG via paint. The PNG preserved the crispness and detail of the BMP. So I got a GIF and converted it to PNG, in Paint. Preserved the color! So, it's a color setting in Photoshop. I have fiddled with them, and it often seems like I have found the right one, I think its gonna work, but I still get the crappy quality. What exactly should I do?

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention, my sig is a png which I saved in Photoshop. So, it worked before...

That's very strange.
I use PNGs all the time with Paint Shop Pro, and I've never noticed that happening.

What options are you using to save the PNG?
It looks like something I would expect from lossy compression, but PNGs use lossless compression.

I am having a problem saving sprites as a PNG. I suffer major loss of colour. I thought they were more detailed then a GIF.

Here is a GIF sprite.

It looks the way I want it.

Now PNG:

How can I fix this? I save it in Photoshop.

Edit: sorry about white bg on png. Don't mention that please. I don't feel like re-uploading it with a trasparent one.
