I hear Powerbooks are nice, but wouldn't I have to use Mac OS? That's not really an option.

Well it really depends what you need laptop for, if you want one for work then by no means
do you have to spend loads of money.

I haven't noitced any nice deals on laptops lately, but if I see something ill be sure to post it.

If he doesn't have access to something portable, then I'd recommend it...

I've seen laptops as low as $400, but they're pretty outdated... should I post links to them?

Hmm, if you can manage to save up a little more, I'd suggest an Apple Powerbook. Those lil' puppies are pretty slick pieces of equipment.

Something in the range of $1000 (Canadian), ~2Ghz, at least 256MB RAM and 40GB HD. Any suggestions?
