But it's not like he was in baseball and called a strike a ball. This had a little more impact.

The umpire was fired for calling out the score wrong.

Imagine working up to the very top of umpiring, making one mistake, and now? He'll probably never umpire a grandslam again.

I would have gone all al gore and demanded a recount. Maybe her dad just took it so cool because she did. Never thought of that before.

I too saw that on ESPN sportscenter...
It was during the tiebreaker of course.
It ended up being 3 -1 rather than 2 -1 after the error.
Then the opponent won 7 - 5 or something like that.

I truly admired the way Venus took it.
During the press conference, she said the point did not affect the outcome of the game. If I was her, I would have said that it affected me badly and that there should be a rematch. I applaud Venus for being such a lady.
After all, Wimbledon is a competition of ladies and gentlemen.

It's like tha one soccer game where that one guy did a header to win the game, but the cameras later showed that he used his fist, instead of his head.

It doesn't hurt your image if you argue it and have a case.

Now if you argue for 2 minutes that a ball was out and the replay shows it was in... The press will have fun.

Eh she is a good player. I'm sure she can make it there again. It defeats the whole puprose of winning 4 in a row again though. She won 3 but too bad she didn't win this year. That would have been good

either that or well...maybe she didn't want to start the controversy itself? i dunno...in some ways, if she still won despite the extra point, then that goes to improve how good she was.

however, if she argued for the point, got it and then lost...then well...i think that would hurt her image a little bit...

so, i think it boiled down to how much talk she wanted to generate because of this...

But then again, she might have. All I know is, if I actually got good aenough at tennis to play in wimbledon, I'd be like super-pissed if that happened to me.

Yeah, I don't think they'd always look at the board to see about the points. I'm sure she kept some type of track on it but not entirely to watch what every single move cost her.

I don't know what their mindset is, really.

They probably just glance at the scoreboard when they switch sides. The focus is on strategy and action instead of wondering how many points you need to force deuce.

Yes, particularly in a tournament such as Wimbledon. Whether there's a difference between "Mental lapse" and "not caring"...who can say, really.

It didn't make a difference in the end though.

If the match ended up being a 7-6 6-7 7-6 marathon, then you can be damn sure she'd be pissed. But she didn't exactly lose by such a slim margin.

At least she took it gracefully though. Points for that.

I guess according to the rules of tennis, once the next point begins to be played, there's no recourse for the wronged, in this case, Venus. She didn't seem to make a big deal out of it herself, basically saying that sometimes she loses track of points during matches, and she thought she'd just done so again.

In that case, it would be Venus. I do remember her dad saying that one point sholdn't have been able to decide the match. You'ld think that he'd argue for a rematch orsomething like thath.

It was Venus Williams, not Serena.

At least if we're talking about the same incident...her opponent got credited with a point she never earned (I believe the score was announced as 3-1 instead of 2-1), which helped her win.

Serena not only lost in the finals, she did so in straight sets.

Yeah, I think that's the one. I don't know for sure though because I only saw the replays on sportscenter like I said.

You mean at the Wimbledon last week? I didn't see it or hear much about Serena's one point. All I know is that the 17 yr old won. I figured she didn't win by much..Serena's good.

I saw the strangest thing on sportscenter the other day. Serena williams was playing tennis, and the other person got a fault. Or so it seemed. Serena played the point, and her opponent got the point. Her opponent only won by one point, I think.
