To download XXXX, go here:

http://homepage1.nifty.com/~ds79/kamikaze/xxxx/index.html

...and click on the link right under the screenshot at the top that says:

「XXXX」 (2003/12/13 正規版 IPS差分ファイル

(it contains the English letters IPS, so you should be able to see that part even without Japanese fonts)

Actually this works for all his hacks. Click under the screenshot of the one you want to play on the main page, and then click on the link (containing "IPS") under the screenshot on that page.

I can't wait to try the Hanshin Tigers version!

And thanks for the props, Googie!

HH, your head's in the wrong game. SMB1 lava was merely just graphics. It was 3's that killed you on contact, and that wound't explain how he managed to get them in all 4 directions.

It was most likely a use of a rarely (or unused) object with some ASM changes.

Probably just an ASM hack, or he put lava there and changed the GFX. (Could be done on a per-level basis via ASM.) Enemies = sprites, so I doubt he'd use them.

Yup... someone needs to translate that site, it looks like it could have some interesting stuff on there

You know he has a section about spikes on that site... but as you said it's in Japanese... dangit... If anyone here is any good at ASM I'm looking for people to look to see if they can find what he changed to make the tiles hurt you. I'll be looking too, I just would like a pair of experienced eyes to look too.

Official site (in japanese, but it's easy to find downloads, pages etc., just check your browser's statut bar)

Out of curiosity, where could I find this hack? I always like to add a good hack (or even a bad one, sometimes) to my collection.

But yeah, this is probably ASM or something, 'cause I don't think there were any instant-kill enemies/things in SMB, if I remember right. But don't ask me, I don't have a clue about ASM, except that you use it to add stuff that wasn't there before X_X

Onnly problem with that is that XXXX's spikes instantaneously killed you (arrgh)... enemies would just damage you, and you would probably be able to damage/kill the enemy, making it kinda bad (unless you managed to keep the enemy onscreen, but that brings up another problem of what-if-I-wanted-a-row-of-them... damn)

You could put them at the very bottom of the screen and they'd function just like falling into any other pit.

Or, if you wanted them in other places, could you simply use an enemy that never moves, adjusting the graphic to look like a spike?

He most likely hacked the assembly to add the effect.

If anyone played Kamikaze's AMAZING hack Super Mario Bros. XXXX you would notice the use of killer spiked floors. I would really like to use those in my next hack, but I don't know how to make them. Anyone have any idea? I'm pretty sure I could do it if I got pused in the right direction.
