What you could do is go to a professional file recovery place and have them recover the file from before you did that by reading the traces of magnetism left on the disk, but that'd be way expensive. Seriously though, LM overwrites the old GFX, so you're not getting them back anytime soon. I suggest backing up all custom GFX files.

Only if you're using a very old version...the file expansion bug was fixed a long time ago. I'd blame TLP for far more ExGFX problems than YY-CHR.

It seems I had the same problem as you Dugy. I hate TLP tho so, thats why I use YY. Its actulyy my fault for acidentally inserting GFX before Extracting. YY saved me from doing all the work over again

Thanks guys, I did exactly "loose" my GFX, they all disappeared from the Lm screen, and when I played it in zsnes. I still have my allgfx.bin file intact. I have transfered my OW to another ROM, and saved all 256 edited levels and transfered them. I have my ROM about 90% (just a guess) back to how it was. The only thing I need to do is ALL the ExGFX, ALL the custom GFX, ALL the secondary exits (This will take forever) ,and ALL the block tool inserts. So I am glad that I had at least a backup, it was handy. Now I make backups everyday.

sometimes when i insert my gfx or exgfx i 'lose' my standard mario world animations and all the other graphix from GFX 33, this hapened today and 2 weeks ago. Fortunately I bacj up my hack almost everyday, mainly when I rip newexgfx and change the events of the ow, to prevent anything.

Well, at least they are not hand drawn.

What REALLY sucks is when you lose some hand-drawn graphics, though, because you don't really have any reference for what they were like. I actually lost part of my castle graphics inspired by something from YI, but not actually ripped. Thankfully I knew exactly what it was like, and was able to redo it, but, if it's old enough you can't do that... Which is why you should always make backups periodically.

@Smallhacker:
Actually there are ways to restore a freshly formatted hard disk; but usually this only works when there are no new data on it (and though it is expensive, like when giving the hard drive to a file recovery service)

There really may not be a way to do that; same thing with me some days ago: I worked on ripping sprites from a game, using one save state only (to keep the original saves instead simply to backup these somewhere else, what was a fatal mistake; too late, yes ), so I proceeded and proceeded and hit F2 than F4 suddenly in the title screen.
My data got overwritten I have no access left; some hourswere lost (at least I have the rips until then )-> thinking on that _beforehand_ could have saved me; this usually comes lately when something happened

Oh no! I formated my Hard Drive by accident! Can somebody please help me to recover my hack? Thanks.

Seriously... Backup more often is sadly the only thing you could do to prevent it. Also, there is no way for you to get your old graphics back unless you remake them. Sad but true. If you are still sad/angry/both, then sue FuSoYa for finding the decompression routine.

You just have to remake them or use your old backup. That's all you can do.

I'd suggest to keep at least two copies of the ROM.
Especially when dealing with major changes on the overworld or messing with ExGFX in larger amounts a backup can help, for example if all GFX mess up suddenly or the overworld gets corrupted.
(Heck, there should be an option to dump an overworld ...
I know it can be tranferred to another ROM, but not dumped)

On the old board Jesper posted a small tool called "Lunar Backup", but dunno know its work and how effective it was

Make backups more frequently (say, every other time you edit your ROM). Two weeks can be a looooooong time, depending on how actively you're working on your hack. I'm afraid that's the only suggestion that'll help you here.

I was editing some graphics in YY-chr and saved them. Then I opened up LM and accidentally hit the insert GFX. All my custom gfx disappered including all the blocks!. I have a backup from about 2 weeks ago but it is OLD compared to waht I had done. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem. Thanks.
