I say both. But I also say that this is going to incite a flame war.

I do both, if it has alot of songs I already have on CDs then I won't buy it. But if it doesn't then I will. But most of the time I just download.

Both - I usually buy the songs I want, but sometimes you just can't (because the song isn't available in this country), so I DL. Serves the buggers right for not thinking about us eh
I also DL a LOT of covers/Remixes/Para para Mixes, and they're like gold dust to buy, but can be found OL easily.

I tend to download loads of albums (I have about 2500+ mp3s) but when I get an album I really like I go out and bye it because the sound quality is just so much better it doesn

Some albums, I only want two or three songs. If that is not the case, I'll just go and buy it. Either way, I pay to download too (like $15 a year) so either way, I'm paying for it now.

I mostly download, but blame on the fact that the music I download aren't sold in the stores.

My music collection is mostly made of game music, and remixes of them.

If it's a really good artist I buy it directly. Otherwise I always download first, and if I don't like it extremly much I don't buy it.

I usually download my music, but every now and then, I decide to buy a CD. I will usually only like a few songs on an album, and therefore have no need for a whole CD to get to a few songs.

I download for previewing purposes on occasion. I like iTunes quite a bit, but their 30 second previews are usually the least interesting or recognizable part of the song,

I don't buy music very often though. Probably about once per year.

My friend is a music downloading whore, and I just tell him "burn me that CD". So I basically get most of my music from friends, but every once in awhile I'll download a song, and if I really happen to like it I just "may" happen to go out and buy the CD that contains that song. But that's douptful.

I refuse to buy new CD's put out by RIAA-affiliated artists. I know that sucks for the artists, but I don't want the evil extortionist cartel making any money off of me. I just keep trolling the local music store to find stuff used, so I can get full albums legally and support a nifty business at the same time.

I'll happily purchase new CD's by artists on non-shitty labels. Lately, I've gotten some good releases from Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys, and Mary Prankster (I even got a MP beater tank, too, because she just kicks so much ass ). The aforementioned local store carries lots of random and indie stuff, which is another reason I want to support them.

I'll only download stuff if I wouldn't buy it anyways. I like looking through the booklet and stuff. That and if I have it on vinyl, as I am too lazy to rip it myself.

I buy from struggling bands and that's it, no matter how much I like the succesful ones. The problem with this whole issue is that bands like Metallica, who see a much, much, MUCH greater profit margin from individual album sales than just about any other group on the face of the earth, were hyped up by the media to make it seem like downloading is taking money away from the artists. In reality, downloading is taking sizeable, but completely manageable, slices of profits from RECORD LABELS. The artists literally get less than a percent of the cost of each individual album. Most groups' royalty fees are less than one percent of album sales, and their contracts usually require them to pour most of that money into touring, and the next album. So it really does hurt small, underground artists and labels when you get their music without paying for it (even though it does help word-of-mouth knowledge of bands to spread much more quickly than it would without things like Kazaa), but as for major-label bands and artists, they aren't going to see a penny's difference one way or the other. All you're hurting are record label profits. I still buy when I really like the album, but I have exceptions that require me to exclusively download content.

1. The bands' frontman or founding member(s) are dead. I.E. Nirvana, the Beatles, Alice in Chains, etc. I'm sure the deceased members of the band would be happier knowing that their music survived for free in the underground, and wasn't representing the continually bulging wallets of the scumbags that screwed them their whole lives.
2. The band retains its members, but has lost sight of their vision by the seas of cash in which they swim. I.E. Red Hot Chili Peppers. What is this new shit anyhow?! I know this is just a matter of opinion, but come on, what happened? If I want to purchase an older album from them, all I'm supporting is the new, plastic version of the band, and the foul label that produces them. I'd rather download the good old stuff so as to be able to enjoy the classic spirit of good times and funk that they originally had going for them without having to contribute to the dead horse-flogging.
3. The band sucks, and was never good to begin with. I don't regard most mainstream pop as having a soul of any kind. Sorry, but if you don't write your own material, you are what is commonly referred to as a COMMERCIAL. I hate paying for advertising even more than I hate telemarketing calls that put me on hold. In fact, I only download mainstream pop songs in order to inject some comic relief into some mix CD or another. Why should I pay for a laugh?

Arrg!! Watch out, I'm toppling off my soapbox and I don't know where I'm going to land!!!!

I buy whenever I can.

Of course, I be wary with what I do buy. Supporting the artists you like is great, but supporting the artists you hate really, really sucks

Where I live CD's are no expensive than $14 (unless it has 2+ discs), so I tend to buy more, but I do download ocassionally.

Depends. At times I'll blind-buy a CD because of a friend's recommendation, or I'll be impressed by a couple songs I heard from someone else's CD or computer that I'll buy it myself. I do download quite a bit, however, and most of the time I download full albums. That's the only way I can really tell if I'll like the album. Usually I'll keep those MP3s until I get around to buying the CD, though that's not always the case. At times I'll just download an album, get rid of the MP3s, and not ever buy that CD. I feel it's a smart thing to do, and if I'm a bastard for it, then so be it.

Last night I downloaded Air's Talkie Walkie. On track 4, and I like it all so far. I intend on buying this eventually.

Since I can't afford $50 CDN to import a CD from Scandinavian countries or Russia or Poland, etc. I mostly download. But, me and my parents do have more than 1000 CD, records and cassettes.

The only stuff I tend to download is anime or videogame tracks. Or other versions of songs I already have like 'My Immortal'. If I can I like to buy albums, I like the artwork and lyric sheets. If someone's done all the work just to entertain me, I should at least pay them for the privilige.
