Really, it depends on the situation. And use your head when it comes to using them as well. Not very much fun if a hack shows off more than it shows you what the hacker can REALLY do.

Medium. You don't want to overuse them, but you could use some in some places. But people should learn to make ExGFX that would apply to a custom block, such as a cracked block or a block with Mario's face with a big X on it. Be creative with the blocks, don't just use the X spot in GFX14 to use for all the blocks, just in different colors.

I am absolutely stunned by the number of people here who have voted that a hack needs a gazillion different custom blocks to be any good.

A better answer would be a minimal number of custom blocks. It seems, dare I say, stupid just to put in lots of different custom blocks just for the sake of having a hack with a gazillion different custom blocks. Simply using the blocks that are useful per your level designs, or using the blocks you like, should suffice.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with basing an entire level around custom blocks, so long as there are not too many such levels. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with using only a few custom blocks in a hack, even if those few are only used sparingly. Just use what you like, and no one should feel any compulsion to include more custom blocks just for the sake of including more custom blocks.

Hmm, I think we need to add some more Custom Blocks to Block Inserter (Block Inserter hasn't been updated in a long time,... I know Jonwill quit, but someone else could make some more)

A lot. Basically, one of each, minus those that seem unnecessary or repetitive. I haven't used them all, but they're all available.

I voted Normal, if I could, I'd vote normal and higher. But you also need some ExGFX as well...

I've only used a few custom blocks in my hack, and it doesn't seem likely that I will use many more than that.

I only use custom blocks when I really need them; I generally don't design levels around them. For example, my Chuck boss won't end the level properly if he's killed with fireballs or a cape (they make the battle too easy anyway), so I put a "powerup-removing beam" right at the entrance to his chamber that takes away everything but Super Mushrooms.

Of course, I did create a few custom blocks "just for fun" (like a random "?" block), but I'm trying my hardest not to overuse them.

My thoughts exactly.

Har. Someone actually mentioned ZZT in this thread. Makes me shed a tear, actually.

A few...but then again I'm not done putting them into my hack

A lot of them, since they allow creative people to use great level ideas and make levels more fun, so lots and lots of custom blocks

I voted lots. In all honesty, there are more custom blocks out there than there are original blocks for this game. We need variety.

Custom blocks do make things interesting, but you don't need a lot. A lot of hacks are fine without them.

Just enough to make things interesting.

Well... Only use blocks that fit... You can't make 2 identical corridors, one filled with Mario blocks and one filled with Luigi blocks. That's just lame. Do ONLY use the blocks you REALLY need.

Good:
Use blocks needed for the level

Bad:
Use too many in a level
Release a hack where you tried out every single block
Use a large amount of blocks and belive that you are cool by doing that.

I think custom blocks are intresting, they make hacks more fun and/or challenging. So I voted lots.

Again, here's another poll for you. Since the whole ExGFX one... well, hey, let's do it again, shall we?

I'm personally on the minimal only-what-fits part. After all, if I have a speed level, I'm just going to use dash blocks for it. I'm not using a, say, Luigi block or a no-yoshi block.

So here you go.
