Anyone else surprised by all the people saying that hacks should be as easy as the original game, particularly considering the original was a little too easy? Seems like such a waste of hacking talent....

Personally, I like how the original SMW did it's difficulty... I'd say like the original, wiht Special Worlds and such maybe being harder...

I just realized I never voted

Hacks should be about 1.5 times more difficult than the game they are a hack of, in my opinion. For instance, the first level can be around the level in the very middle's difficulty, and it slowly works up from there.

I guess you can just go with whatever you want. For worlds with only one access point, a good idea might be to stick with what it is in the levels near there, but really, do whatever, it's optional. (I once made a really crappy/easy hack as a way of learning LM, and though everything was way easy, Yoshi's House was turned into a relatively hard optional level. You can get it at www.zophar.net under the name Super Mario Wuss. (The creator is listed as "pokemon hack master" because a "friend" of mine submitted it without asking, also not giving me a chance to remove something in the last Special World level that was NOT supposed to be in the public release. ) Just be warned, it really sucks. I was just figuring out how to use LM and decided I'd make a hack out of it.)

It can be easy without being "very easy." Heck, I'm not sure I'd even call all the levels of World 1 in SMB3 "very easy." There's nothing wrong with a little difficulty in World 1, so long as it's not overdone.

I also don't believe each level has to be harder than the last, necessarily. A general increase in difficulty is all right, but not every level needs to be harder than the last... certainly OK to have levels more difficult than most others for the point in the game, and all right having a few "break" levels, too.

I voted 'like the original', really more 'easier and harder than the original'. Some parts of it were too easy, some too hard. (I still hate Iggy Koopa being the first boss; he's not overly difficult, but it's a bit hard for world 1.) It should generally start easy and end hard.

I'd say about 2ce as hard as the original, maybe 3 times.

The original SMW was a walkover and very,very easy for any platformgame expert. I recon it was designed to be beaten by just about anyone and everyone.

smw was too easy to beat, so imo, the hack has to be more difficult then he original game at smw's case

And if it requires a save state for you, then you KNOW its too hard and you had better get to making it easier right then and there.

Beta testers are a good way to make sure that your hack isnt too hard, or too easy for that matter

Personally I would like it if the most hacks was as hard or just little more hard than the orginal levels.

Many hackers should let others players test their hacks, something that is a easy level for you maybe needs savestates for other players.

I'm guessing by 78 savestates per level, you're referring to my hack ....

Yeah... I know it's pretty impossible. Some people say it's way too hard, and some others have told me they like the insane difficulty. I just don't know what to do .

Hacks should be slightly more difficult than the original... thats what makes them good... but the fact that a few of them require 109438761092385 savestates in a few levels really turns some people off...

The difficulty level should start out low and increase gradually. Extra and hidden levels actually can have a really challenging difficulty; even when already early ones; just see FPI'S demos from TSRP II for example
The essential levels should rather include nasty traps than too tricky secret exits. So if you will need for a invisible key hole in a level with no hints like coins around it to proceed, it is simply unfair and far than funny

I think hacks that are hard are better than any other choice. I think that very hard to find secrets are great but not impossible if you think about it. Like don't make a solid wall with a one tile high 'walk thru' block that only mario can enter but he has to have a cape to get over a huge gap infected with fire spitting pirana plants. Thats too hard (actually impossible). There should however be some levels that are near impossible later on in the game.

I have to agree with you JJ64, a bit more difficult than the original, but not to hard...
But I want the secrets to be hard to find. Well, not hard to find, but hard to get to.
