BTW, to change which palette the rex uses, figure out which palette you want to change to (only palettes from 8-F are valid for sprites). Then subtract 8. Then multiply by 2. Call this number x. You take x and add 41 hex or 65 decimal and put this new number at rom address 1987C. Then you take x and add 01 hex or 01 decimal and store this number at rom address 1987D. That should change the palette used.

Ya Aioria that is what I have actually been doing, however I can only use a maximum of 4 or 6 (can't remember) colours. I see lots in the bottom cornor but when I click on them it changes all the colours automatically.

I have been trying to find it using a palette editor but no luck. I have found how to edit the rex colours (by accident and I would be able to tell or remember how because I didn't write anything down), change the intro to a white revealing screen circle instead of black, and I think I may have changed the boarder around the game because when I reloaded it was black.

But becasue I found the rex colour I would think that most of the spirit colours would be around that area. Wish I had wrote it down.

EDIT: And back to my OW Palette, I now know I am not supposed to use 0-3 but I was using four (is there a zero if not ignore this) and it was still messed up. So now my black and white island is green like normal ground.

Might as well get this question out of the way, If I expand my ROM will I be able to add more GFX?

i had this problem ripping the yoshi train from YI. in lunar magic, the train was mainly blue, and at the game the palete was pink instead of blue. I had to change all the paletes at yy to find a decent color.

For all you Freewebs users: The files are CASE SENSITIVE! If the extension says .GIF, don't put .gif. It won't work.

Does anyone have links to threads/files or something that has those addresses like $23718 or whatever. I have found a palette editor that will let me put in one of these address at it will let me edit the palette of that address. I need to get mega mole's address but any would be great thanks.

Sorry, but, you can't make a sprite use a different palette without ASM.

Uhm... THAT is impossible... Sprites cannot use object palettes. Hardware limitations.

LOL ya I know Freewebs sucks and noone likes it I don't really even like it but I don't feel like looking for a new place to upload pictures. Although I have heard photo or picture bucket is good.

okay so how do other people (like Fu and Atma and the guy that made Luigi's Adventure) have replaced sprites with correct colours? Is there any possible way I can do this without ASM?

What Im trying to say is, how do I use a differnt Palette number instead of Mario's palette. The BG palette would be great.

It's not known very much about sprite hacking, but somebody might (if you're really lucky) have found the byte where the palette number is stored.

Yes mario and '?' blocks are messed up with weird colours. So if I don't use Mario Palette will it work correctly? This is getting really annoying because I need this guy for one of my levels.

All I did was use YY-CHR and copy this spirits GFX overtop of the Mega Moles GFX. Then I saved and open up LM. Inserted the GFX and changed the spirits to load as the mega mole one and edited the palette. I always save so I have no idea what Im doing wrong. I see hacks all the time with different sprite GFX and the colours look fine.


BTW how do I make it so I don't use Palette 8 for the spirit?

The problem lies with the fact that it uses palette 8. The problem with Palette 8 is that it is partly used for the Mario palette and the last few colors that can be used for sprites are overridden with the proper colors if you use custom palettes, and if you don't, well, then you're messing with the Mario palettes and that's no good.

Don't feel stupid.. common mistake.. Do you mean Spirits sounds better with the I sounding like the I in pie? oh well..
I wouldn't think that ASM'd be the only way, but you would use a hex editor...
I'm assuming that the level's Set to use a custom palette, right? (Well, actually, that wouldn't matter, seeing that even if you alter the shared one...). Hmm.. If you're editing the 8x8 Graphics, are you saving them with F9 and then Re-Inserting them?

I am positive I have the correct spirit index and have changed the palette. To be clearer all I did was replace the Mega Mole GFX with a mushroom GFX. Here are the pictures:


This is what my spirit looks like in the game


He goes Up and down while sliding across the ground.


This is what the mushroom is supposed to look like. This is from LM.

And to go about changing the palette using ASM how would I do that? Using a hex editor? Is the ONLY way to get my spirit to look like it does in LM to use ASM?

EDIT: I feel so stupid. All this time I have been calling them spirits when they are called sprites. Anyway spirits sounds better

Nobody knows how to add sprites, but we might or might not be close.
Use a palette greater than Three, and it MAY work.

You probably didn't edit the palette, only the sprite index of LM. That's just so it looks proper in LM if it's off, you can't change which palette something loads for the ROM without ASM, you need to change the palette.

At least, I *think* that's the problem, if you actually replaced the sprite (as opposed to replacing it's graphics) I've no clue.

Okay for the spirit I replaced the Mega Mole (BTW does anyone know how to ADD spirits without replacing old ones OR how to asign spirits to certain pla I think it is? Like if you use underground the bat would be a bat but if you used castle it would be a different looking bat?)

And I did use pal 2. I guess I would have to change it to one above 3?

For the former, state which sprite you replaced. For the latter, make sure you're not using Palletes 0~3 for the overworld pallettes.
