Acmlm's Board - I2 Archive - Super Mario World hacking - I'm abandoning Mario Legacy to work on something new. Should I keep the multi-colored flash?

I liked Mario Legacy, in most places. I remember you at one point saying that no two levels in a row should be the same type, and I agree with it. If you stick to what you said with levels as unique and interesting as some of the ones you made in Mario Legacy, you'll have a great hack.
And I liked the flashing thing. Is there anything in it you could tweak, like making it go faster or something?

On the stupid flamewar:
Kyouji - Keep up the good work pointing out flaws in hacks. Try to refrain from insulting people, and, if you can, make your suggestions in the indicative mood, rather than imperative or subjunctive. Imperative is "Fix the hole you can't fall down", subjunctive is Kario's "good" response. Indicative is what I use for an example below. Indicative mood offends only the easily offended!

Everyone else - stop getting offended when Kyouji points out tiny flaws in your hacks, he's good at it and it makes the hacks better. If he recomends something stupid, then you should ignore it. That's how feedback works, people.

Finally, I think both of Kario's response examples should be considered bad.

Good:
In level __ there is a hole you can't fall down.

Much more to the point, gets the job done, isn't offensive.

... And Kario's debate skills are clearly far greater than those of either of us.

I will be honest with ya...........IT DOESNT MATTER. FuSoYa or BMF could come in here and tell just about everyone here that we suck, so why does it matter. Sure, I have noticed that those things were wrong (execpt the title, that never happened to me) but look at it this way, the original SMW had things wrong with it, so lets look at this this way:
Bad Response:
OMG there is a hole you can't fall down. YOU SUCK.
Good Response:
Ummm....in level _____ there is a hole that you can walk across without any problems. Maybe you should fix that for the next release.

Okay, the impossible bit is an exaggeration, but the rest is true. No graphical glitches? NO GRAPHICAL GLITCHES? >>>XD

This happens in the intro movie. Look at the title screen to see what's wrong.

Go down from the pipe above to get to this, where you're completely stuck. Not so much a graphical glitch as an oversight on your part, but a fatal one.

This isn't too bad, just a nitpick. Those cacti seem to just float above the ground. Same with oil spills in other areas.

The problem here is obvious.

Waiter, you've got ground in my sky.

So what if Knuck said that then? At the point she would've been talking about the original UMW, my hack DID suck. That would've been around the time I was working on Mario Legacy, the first. Or Kyouji's Hack even. Both were awful. And wasn't the original UMW a mess of graphical glitches? The "New" UMW was, admittedly, better, but... If it was the "New" UMW, that was before he even played ML. Seriously, she said she judged it entirely off of screenshots and didn't like it because it dodn't have much ExGFX on IRC a long time ago. I convinced her to play it, and, she gave a list of problems and aside from scrapping the current graphics and making a few levels linear, I followed it all. So please leave knuck's comments out of this. I won't deny the parts on poor level design being evident in most of the hack, that's why I'm scrapping it, but please choose your comments more carefully.

Wait, wait, wait. You think my hack is crap because it heavily overuses ExGFX workshop files and is full of graphical glitches, as well as having points where you're forced off of Yoshi in order to go under gaps and points where it's downright impossible, as well as having a baby Yoshi at the start of a level that Yoshi isn't banned from?

Graphical Glitches? I didn't notice a single one when I tested the hack.

Impossible? I've never heard a bigger lie in my life.

No...I meant for like poor level design and the like. Seriously, if a hack isn't 100% perfect the way you see it you trash it and say it's horrible...while you yourself has this horrible hack? I'm not the only one who thinks this, proven by the private message sent to me by Knuck:

I can't believe that you are going to remake a great hack like your just because a moron (aka kyouji) said he didn't like it. Dude, i just played it, it's GREAT. Tell that moron to stfu and keep up the good work. He is just a damn newbie that knows nothing about hacking (try his hack, it sucks ).

He's talking about the ORIGINAL umw, too.

You should keep the standard fade-out. It just looks better.

And I'm glad to see you're moving on to something new, because for the same reasons you think my hack is crap, I think your hack is even more crap.

No, you should stick with the fade to black. It's a little smoother.

I did not like that flash even if it didn't affect the gameplay, so if I were you, I shouldn't keep it. But it's not up to me to decide...

Well... There are one good and one bad thing about the flash.
Good: It's a nice hack
Bad: The result isn't that good

When I played it, I thought "Wow! I would never be able to make that", but the flashing colors didn't look very good... I see no point in keeping them, unless you have got a disco floor after each goal and the floor's colors changes, while it plays some disco music... Wait... What am I talking about? Uhm... Oh, yeah... Please don't keep the flash.

I am aware there's nothing wrong with defending yourself, but if you're constantly saying "NO, YOU'RE WRONG! THE ANSWER IS YES!" whenever someone votes no, it doesn't exactly increase your reputation. Anyway, I don't want you to judge this by what other people have said. Think about whether YOU like it, not whether anyone else does. If everyone is swayed by the arguments of others, I can't get an accurate reading of how many people like it and how many don't.

See, but that's my point. It doesn't add anything, it doesn't take anything away. And since it seems to piss a lot of people off, there's no real reason to keep it.

PS: There's nothing wrong with trying to justify your reasoning for using it.

Aye, but that be the point. It does not DETRACT from the game either, and since to my knowledge my hack is the only one that utilizes it, it's a refreshing change. Still, I'm not trying to change your vote. *calmly walks away*

The disco affect doesn't do anything to enhance the game, so I vote no.

I know, I know, there are many people out there who are shocked and angered by this, who want it finished. But, with my job, and my homework, I just can't handle it.

Plus, there are several people out there who outwardly said it stunk. I have those people in mind, as well.

This is mildly normal; I don't like where the project is going. While several levels are simply brilliant (Dino Isle 1, Dark Cemetary 1, Chuck's Mountain seem most popular), others are simply lackluster (Dino Isle 2, Dark Cemetary 2, All Harmony Isle levels except Chuck's Mountain, most of Lucid Plains levels).

However. I will start a new project, that which I intend to finish (Boy, like we haven't heard THAT before)

The way I see it, it's a good thing; I'll completely rework all the graphics before I get started. I can't do that now on Mario Legacy because it'll conflict terribly with other things.

Several notes, however: Some of the more popular elements of Mario Legacy (Legitimate story, varied levels) will go in to the new project. In fact, the story will be mostly the same. It will have to be changed somewhat to fit everything new, but, regardless, it stays the same; Mario goes exploring, accidentally infuriates ghost tribe by killing Big Boo, has to deal with Bowser's troops, natives, and ghost tribe, Big Boo's spirit is revived in to King Boo, Mario fights King Boo in ingenuitive battle. In addition, some of the better levels will, after undergoing some graphical overhauls, but put in this new hack.

I assure you it's probably for the best. Thanks to everyone who gave me support.

This is where the poll comes in: I want to know whether to keep the multi-colored flash at the end. I like it, many do not.

Summary: Mario Legacy canned, replaced with larger, more time-consuming hack featuring both linear and nonlinear levels in the same style as that of Mario Legacy, popular levels retained, features graphical overhaul with my own graphics (none from ExGFX workshop, very few rips). Need to know about multi-colored flash.

Summary to summary: Abandon ML to work on bigger, better projects. Should I keep disco effect?
