Click me.

Wario's hack page.

I'm going to go stab myself in the eyes now, thank you.

Yeah, they would be in the hacks section, under SNES.

That must be the wrong hack, then... I saw another awhile back that was JUST a graphic change hack, simply changed Mario's graphics to Dr. Mario. If Wario's hack changed the levels too, then it's probably a different one...

I didn't even *know* Zophar had SMW hacks.

I figured anyone who hadn't played it would've checked Zophar.

I was wrong. Oh well. Now that I think about it, who would? Even though it's listed right there, it's a pain in the ass to get to, and not many even submit hacks there, as far as I can tell.

But yes, the Dr Mario hack by Wario.

I was listing it because he DID change the mario sprites [headbnad, white suit] but it's a Wario game. It's destined to suck.

And suck it did.

On this page there is a Dr.Mario hack (which I hadn't tried myself BTW)

But i'm sure that there is severeal Dr.mario SMW hacks, so that hack maybe isn't the same as Xk was talking about.

I do remember someone making one for some time ago.

Edit: Well I have to agree about the enemies, many hacks lacks Enemies, there are enemies but sometimes just a very few of them, or people don't use some of them... how many times have you seen Dino Rhinos in hacks?

You can't forget Dr. Mario.

Guess who made THAT hack.

You can forget it. Because I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO FIND IT.

Which sucks, because I wanted to try it out but I totally lost it and everyone else seemed to forget it and I actually don't know who made it which is a shame because from the screenshots it looked pretty cool and this sentance has no punctuation or anything so if you're reading this in your head you might be gasping for breath which is stupid because you're reading in your head you dingus but it's still annoying so I'll stop.

EDIT: Oh, and on the topic I'd just like to mention... Enemies. Alot of hacks I've seen are lacking in intelligent or interesting use of enemies. Or lacking in enemies in general. It sucks. Enemies are great, we don't just want platform jumping all the time. We wanna bash Koopas and dodge cleverly placed fire breathing dinosaurs and trampling giant Banzai Bills with Yoshi. We want to torch Cheep Cheeps, Spin Jump off Podoboos and have aerial fights with swarms of Super Koopas.

People can do great hacks even without asm, it is just a matter of fun and well designed levels, w/ the right difficulty level

Difficulty is a major issue. Most people like to make a really hard hack. But thing is... we're playing SMW, not Halo on Ledgendary mode (or some comparison). If you have to use a savestate to get passed your level, redo it.

People use the SMAS graphics too much. Sure, it was a remake of the classic NES games, but that was it! Nothing more than a graphics change. Don't use them.

Then there is the fun factor. We play SMW for one reason: it was fun. Sure it was easy, but it was still fun. You can make the easiest hack ever and it could still be fun... somewhat...

If you can make a fun level, who gives a shit if you don't know ASM?

People want fun levels, not only ASM hacks. You can use SCROLLING PIPES and it won't matter if level design is crappy.

Sure, having an easy-to-use editor results in plenty of crappy hacks, but also quite a few good ones you wouldn't normally have. (There's no convincing some Pok

Earlier, people had to know asm or at least how to work with a hex editor in order to make a hack. That was quite positive, 'cause people working about 5 minutes for a single ledge think twice before they place it amidst the air. And if they work ~10hrs per level they also try to make it really good, otherwise noone would play it and the work was for waste.

Coming from the DooM editing community, I know all too well how much the progression of easy-to-use editing utilities has led to lots of newcomers releasing bad projects. I made sure my DooM maps were of a decent standard before I started sharing them with the community and I'll do the same here.

So true...

WHen I play, I don't use savestates. Beta test your levels hackers. Let other people test the game. Something which seems very easy for you is very hard for others.

And I hadn't seen many hacks where Mario is replaced...

It sucks, really. I see all sorts of hacks that look really cool, but have one-block jumps at varying heights over bottomless pits on level one. I generally try to make the first world easy, the last world hard, and the rest somewhere in the middle. Consider that only you have ever played the game before, and other players won't know anything about it. You may know the level layout, but they don't until they play it. Don't just take the secret shortcut every time, try every route. Assume the player hasn't even played SMW before; after all, this is an entirely new game. And for God's sake, don't cheat when you're testing! (I know some people that do. ) You don't get an impression of how hard it is. It's alright if, say, you need to go through the first chunk of the level to test something near the end, but run through it a few times without cheats. In fact, if you have the time, do the whole level every time. It may slow you down, but you'll get a better idea of what needs improvement, spot problems you may not have before (on about the 36th run through one of my levels, I found a bug that'd kill you if you ran too fast, I never saw this in any of the 35 previous runs), and not to mention, if the levels are fun, you'll enjoy it. (If not, consider changing them.)

Yes, he did. I once had to use about 30 savestates to complete a world, and the next one was hardly easier. I always change around my vine-jumping worlds, so they're possible.

Yep, Hyperhacker hit the nail on the head. The only thing missing in most hacks is a well-pitched difficulty level. Most hacks start out hard, and get insanely difficult after the first few levels. If you need to use save-states to complete a level, the likelihood is that it is too hard.

I think people should wait about 3-6 (or more) months before publically releasing a hack,...that's if the're an oldbie. If the're a newbie, than they should wait 1-2 years.

People need to show A LOT of progress before releasing a hack, other wise, the player gets bored because there's only 1 world to play,... and then the next version gets released about 2 months later.
It's like starting a game, and only playing part of it, then restarting it from the beginning and playing to a further point in the game,... and then restarting it again, and so on.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
