Oh my god, that's right. I've only seen Mononoke once, but I remember being pretty disturbed by the generous decapitations.
Spirited away is much more relaxed, and very well done. Don't miss it for the world! |

Actually, I always remember the child / kiddie thing about Princess Mononoke... Then about ten minutes into it there's the archery scene... and blood  Takes me by suprise every time 
I haven't seen Sprited Away yet, actually... It was on release at the cinema for a while, but I missed it. It's still yet to be released on DVD in the UK, but it is on the horizon  |

Yes, nicely put. It's strange, when you see or experience anything that's really going to stick with you, you know it from the beginning and it really glues to your brain. Both Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away captivated me immediately, much to my surprise (I had previously been touting a 'child-oriented=kiddie=weak' attitude, but I was pimp-slapped into consciousness by these films!!) |

Oh, age makes no difference to a classic A very good example is Metorid Prime and Ocarina of Time... Both recent games, yet still regarded as classics
I guess, the definition of a classic is that time does not effect it's greatness, whether it it really old or really new |

Aaugh! I forgot Vampire Hunter D!!!! My bad, Kasumi. I left out mononoke and spirited away because those anime are much more recent, and I was focusing on the old-schoolers. But yes, a drastic mistake was made. It's ok, because no one is voting anyway. I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
(However, I would vote for Vampire Hunter D, I think...) |

Princess Mononoke, excellent anime. I haven't seen the rest you mentioned though Kasumi, same with Ghost in a Shell.
Is it another weird type of anime? Confusing like Akira, but yet still great? I've just heard Ghost in a Shell is a masterpiece.
Other than that I guess I really must say my opinion here is pretty baised, only seeing Akira and "some" Ninja Scroll I really can't say which you should get, so that means I need to see these! |

Ghost in the Shell is easily my favorite. In my opinion, it is the best written out of the three, and has the best art.
The characterisation is also good, and manages to play a strong part in the story alongside a very, very strong technical theme. Many titles make the mistake of letting themes like technology and myhtology become so strong that characterisation becomes under-developed.
Although I've already said it should be considered less important, the technology provides a lot of depth to Ghost in the Shell. It makes it interesting and engrosing to watch.
I'm still confused why you haven't added some other classics in there... Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Vampire Hunter D and Blood the Last Vampire would all have made similar, and welcome additions on that list. |

Akira = violent, sceince fiction, philosophy.
Akira is downright a classic, but yes so are the rest. But for me personally if I had to pick at least two out of that list, it would be Akira and Ninja Scroll, but my full vote goes to Akira. |

Okay.... it's taken a lot of thinking... but I've narrowed it down between Akira and Ghost. So, let's see.

Here's the deal. I'm a 21-year old curmudgeon with no patience for series anime, as frantic and complex as it is. So, I like the old violent classics that contained intricate science fiction, politics, history, and philosophy. I know I'm not the only one on this boat, and these flicks seem to be the ones to choose from.
SO
What's your vote? I haven't even decided yet. Allow me to discuss the merits. You may skip my novel if it bores you, but I bet a lot of us feel the same way about this very important issue.
1) Akira is a very realistic depiction of society in decay. From the revolutionaries and martial law, to the biker gangs and shady genocidal/telekinetic research, the movie takes the then-burgeoning cyber-punk genre of the 80's and adds a childishly animated, yet disturbingly violent and deep flair. I don't know my history all that well, but I believe that Akira paved the way for today's manga and anime.
2) Ninja Scroll is less deep, but incredibly well-animated and has probably the best sense of humor out of the three contenders. Jubei, the wandering swordsman, can take gut-shattering punches all week long and still make straight-faced sarcastic remarks to the demons he fights. From the rock-giant to the beautiful blind swordsman's duel, the movie is packed with incredible art and beauty. I think the flick operates on the same artistic principle as a good Tarantino film. It may not have any deep philosophical texture, or realistic content, but we all love the horrific violence and gore, and the jokes touch a common nerve. Great stuff.
3) Ghost in the Shell is probably going to be the favorite of all you hackers out there, since it is much truer to the cyber-punk core than even Akira was. Also superbly animated, this movie deals with the issue of the nature of life, and consciousness. When the 'puppet master' wakes up as he's being deported by the evil corporation that spawned him and delivers his declaration of asylum as a free intelligent being, you know that somewhere in this crazy world, other drunken geeks have hashed out the idea of humans as nothing more than replicating, self-aware patterns. The movie takes that concept and adds a little humanity, while leaving the open ended possibility of machine and man co-evolving in the future. Whoa.
After my speal, my thoughts are more organized, and I've come to the realization that I can't vote for any one over the other. I'm sorry! But I encourage all of you to please pick one. And Defend your candidate from smear campaigns!!!! I must have missed some pro or con in each of these classic movies. Enjoy. |
