let's not try what I suggested

Telnet to port 6667 of some IRC servesr you used to be able to connect to

and you can't ping on a port

ping is ICMP and it doesn't even use ports.... ever....

Napkins: FYI, sometimes I get booted off IRC and can't reconnect for hours on my school's network, but AIM and IE still work fine. I blame it on the packet shaper they have...

Try putting it through port 80 if possible, or ping someone (who you know is online) through port 6667. If you can get through on 80 (which I use because it's HTTP, can't very well block it) but not 6667, they blocked IRC.

[edit] Ping on a port? I need to stop posting when I'm sleepy. Well, try something non-IRC.

I did recently install Norton antivirus and I know that Norton products tend to interfere with internet access, but I installed it over a week ago and I lost IRC access just yesterday. Who knows...

Xin: Like I said I called tech support for the university network but they told me everything should be in order. He didn't mention any system upgrades. Do I believe them, well no, they're a bunch of schmucks.

You're on a university network, right? Have you checked if it is using a new firewall or something?

have you installed any firewall software like zone alarm ? or do you have anything like that already installed ??

can you telnet to an IRC server and get a greeting ?

Perhaps the server name is wrong or maybe the ports.

Hmm.. all of a sudden I have been unable to connect to any server via IRC clients. (I've tried HydraIRC and mIRC) I don't understand. I've changed none of my settings, I called my ISP to see if the network had changed - nothing should be wrong, and I keep getting the message that my connection timed out. Anybody know what could be wrong?
