It's incredibly useful when people are hogging the computer just playing games all day, and you need to do work of some sort. That computer won't be seeing MSN again anytime soon. (FYI, on Win98 it's C:\Windows\HOSTS.)

They didn't have to block the entire site from me.

But that's interesting to learn about that file.

Holy shit Drag...

You're a genius.

I checked it, and it had a HUGE list of DNS' associated with my 127.0.0.1

Here's a small excerpt:

127.0.0.1 www.kazaa-lite-download.de
127.0.0.1 www.1md.de
127.0.0.1 www.mariodolzer.de
127.0.0.1 www.morpheus-forum.de
127.0.0.1 www.overnet-download.de
127.0.0.1 www.overnet-hilfe.de
127.0.0.1 www.winmx-download.de
127.0.0.1 www.winmx-hilfe.de
127.0.0.1 www.download-und-hilfe.de
127.0.0.1 www.filesharing-hilfe-forum.de
127.0.0.1 www.musik-download.biz

I did notice at the bottom of my IE screen that it was trying to access 127.0.0.1 whenever I went to some sites. I thought that was wierd.

And sure enough, classmates.com was there. I deleted it, then tried to go to the site. It worked.

Thanks

EDIT: I think I know what happened. This is at the end:

127.0.0.1 tafmaster.com
127.0.0.1 www.xtra.fm
127.0.0.1 www.mp3bank.nl
127.0.0.1 www.paypopup.com
#END of KL Supertrick (September 24th 2003)

I did that one Kazaalite trick thing and probably blocked myself from a bunch of stuff.

Or...
Windows XP has its own local DNS table:

It's in %system32%\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS

Open that up, and see if there's an entry for www.classmates.com or something. If so, then a worm or something may have added that entry, effectively rerouting the wrong IP to the dns.

Not many people know about this HOSTS file.

This is, of course, assuming you use XP.

Dumbass. Read the first post again. Oh my god, this is just too much. Further proof that people don't read the entire post/thread.

Annnnnnyway....

My friend lives right down the street and we BOTH use Cox. He can go to both sites but I can't. I used to be able to up until a couple weeks ago when it just...stopped. And when trying to access that i.p., I get a bad request.

hmmm classmates.com came up fine for me... only thing I can think of at this point is maybe your ISP's are using some kind of ghetto fabulous cache servers ??

But the DNS server seems to be the error...

What happens when you enter this IP Legion? It's is that site IP.
193.45.10.110

Something DNS servers don't know about a certain sites, I know somebody who couldn't access Acmlm board or any site on Ztnet becuse his ISP DNS server refused to remember the IP of ztnet.

But then I wonder, where does you live friend? And are you sure that your using the same DNS server?

well home based ISP's never block websites....

odds are their server is just down.....

or their DNS is down....

because someone else's ISP could have the DNS for www.classmates.com cached whereas yours doesn't... and if their DNS is down when it tries to lookup will fail

I don't think it would matter, besides, my friend who tested it uses Cox as well. And there really wouldn't be a reason to block these sites and not others.

I can get there.

What ISP are you using Legion?

Try using a proxy and see if you could reach that site in that way. I never heard about ISP's that blocks sites in US...

But I heard about sites that blocks certain IP's, or certain countries.

It's like certain pages have blocked me or something.

Try going here.

Goes to the Classmates site right? Not for me. I get a 404. Same thing happens when I try to access my webmail page for work here at my computer. I asked someone else to go to it and it worked.

I reset my internet settings to default, cleared my cache, reset my modem, rebooted, tried it with two other browsers, and it STILL doesn't work. I've been to these sites many times before but in the past few weeks, I haven't been able to. Any idea on what's wrong?
