I don't know why... I just like carts better. Besides, the gameplay is better on a real SNES.

Yeah, I still prefer ROMs over carts. Even though carts are legal and give that good nostalogic feeling, I lost a lot of my old games anyways, or they were stolen...

- You can get any game easily. Those games that would be real rare as a cart you could find almost anywhere on the net.
- Easy to take screenshots and stuff
- All the graphic filters and sound settings
- Japanese games that were never released here can have their ROMs translated. And romhacking is good of course.
- Save states are pretty cool.

Hmm some bad things though are that
- The rom might not be supported fully and work perfectly like the original cart depending on the emulator used
- Later consoles that use the CD medium, you'd either have to buy the CD to play the game or download ISOs that are huge in file size
- And the emulators for the more recent systems require more powerful computers for games to run perfectly

Yeah, you're forced to beat a hard game without daring try use the keys F2 and F4 when getting through uber-hard passages ... and when you're done you really can say you dit it, and no stupid .zst file which saved you dozens of times restarting the level from the beginning
So I never would sell my SNES, playing hacks on carts would be just nice too. I don't know how it might be possible to transfer it into a blank ROM, or probably by a copier like the Super WildCard DX2 ?

Well see, ROMs may be better than carts, but the experience of playing a game on the original console is better. Sitting in front of a TV with a drink and snacks and glaring at the TV without social contact for hours is different from playing a game, get to a tough spot, load state, enter cheat, load state, save state, come back to it later, load state, repeat.

In a Nutshell:
It depends on own preferencdes:
Carts > Roms:
The Feeling.
Owning it.
Very easy to use.

Roms > Carts:
Hacking.
almost indestructible.
Free.

I'm emulating mostly SNES, but I'd also go with the real console. The emulators have lots of advantages, as better resolution. nifty features like save stating, no danger in corrupting save games, the ability to hack a ROM and taking screenshots for example ...see the posts above me, I don'T want to repeat everything
But on the other hand, I would really adore it to own an SNES Rud(o)ra no Hihou ROM, just to own a game which is rare, I won't me bother ever that the ROM is in Japanese (since I finished it twice I know where to go ), the same goes for PSX and other emulation.

When I'm playing games like Vagrant Story alone or a fighting like Tekken 3 with friends, is much more easier than anyting else:
You bring the console, plug in the console, two controllers, probably a memory card and the players ^^
Technically the PC may beat it in any way, especially dealing the 16-bit systems; on the 32-bit systems people ripped tilesets from games like Suikoden II to use it in RPG Maker 2k/2k3, even in 256-colours the shadings are neat (!), but the real feeling cannot beat the PC at all:

The most beautiful moment when buying a console game is the first insertion in the drive; you just came from the store with the feeling "Yesh, I just bought me a neat game, cannot wait to play the (Mini)DVD at home ", while a ROM is other thing:

"20 seconds ... when will this this be finished ?", or "Crap, it doesn't work with ZSNES, I have to use emulator XYZ which I don't like " ...
I value the classic feeling more than the technical aspects, but as for RnH, I cannot get to a functional cart, so I stick with the ROM (which has as well a good English translation by Lakmir ). Even if I would find it on Ebay for example. it would have that insane high bids I never would be able to buy it then

No they're not. Unauthorized distribution of ROMs is.

Especially with classic systems, dumping is 100% legal now (remember that set of DMCA exemptions that came out?), so if you back up your cart yourself, it's 100% legal to have an image of it.

As long as there are homebrew ROMs then the blanket statement 'roms are illegal' is untrue.

number 2 was stated with the assumptions the game was running the way it was meant to run on a console--meaning running without glitches

But a laptop will hurt my neck if I use it to much, and that is not "comfy"...

anyways, i prefer ROMs over Carts since carts have a life...meaning they will only work for so long before something goes wrong. As for ROMs they can never reallly die and even if they do, it is something external from them. in addition, there are some things with ROMs that you can't get with carts. Two that I can think of are:

1) de-regioning (meaning games released in one region is now available to use in other regions without using other hardware)

2) doing the impossible--there are somethings in games that you can do only once in 1 million years on a console/handheld but can do very often with emulators...

For me it's the other way around, I can't seem to enjoy the game when I play on the PC.

meh, I don't play those games much anyway. I might go to my NES if I ever did wanna play my Duck Hunt again...

But for most games, I play roms, even though I have a NES.

Yes but the game turns into "click on the duck" game.

I found it very boring, to click on a duck that was flying around. It is more fun on the real thing.

And: Blowing in your carts enhances the retro-experience.

I'm sorry I have to say this, but this may be the stupidest of all the arguments in this thread on etiher side.

I don't get a nostalgic feeling when I'm sitting there for 10 minutes cleaning out my cart and hoping it works on my system. I actually get rather pissed, and sometimes just quit trying to get it to work; at which point I go to the computer.

I don't know, but when I have to blow my carts, one time is more than enough.

And as I said on IRC, I store my carts relativly dustfree, in a cupboard or something, don't have any porblems with carts that don't whant to start.

Oh, and Duckhunt, Gumshoe, is there any Zapper-emulation for my Windows-PC?

Yes. FCEUD supports Zapper emulation.

The original is better. Just for the ability to brag about it. Imagine this... :

ROMs:
"Hey! i got tons of ROMs! Want to play?"
"Wow... You pirated games. I can too."

Real thing:
"Hey! I have an NES and Super Mario Bros. Want to play?"
"Really? Awesome."

-Consoles boot faster than any computer ever will and launch the game instantly.
Maybe the console boots faster than a computer, but not faster than an emulator. My old NES took a super long time to load, and that was because the cart didn't work half the time. I get the rom to load 100% time. Tell me which is better

O, c'mon. I don't have this problem with my NES, and its still the same as over 10 years ago. Never had to clean my Carts, they just work.

Mine is a mixed deal.

I think roms are good.

But I hate using the keyboard(meh. I'm too lazy to get a controller ).

And, well, I just prefer a console. The controller is really nice, and I have no problems with it (cept when my NES died ).

-You can use a console while your annoying little brother is on the computer.
This can happen. My little sister had use the computer for school, so it isn't stupid. It is just somthing people don't bother with (like Weasel).
