BMF: I'd LOVE to see that, but don't! Otherwise, the full game won't be that fun...

I can lock it, of course, but that does nothing to protect the ASM hacks, and the art could still be Lunar Decompressed...

I actually think that would be a decent idea. The difference between you releasing this demo is that there are so many new things to see...so many things to show off. C'mon, you should really show off all your advancements, there's nothing wrong with being proud of your achievements. And you know I've been dying for about a year and a half to see some new stuff from you, literally . Just one, one measly demo before your final release, whenever that is, and then no more demos.

Regarding theft: This is my word. If I ever try to steal anything from your hack, you have my permission to strangle me.

DON'T do it. The hack won't be fun annymore if you release a demo. hr>

Only if he puts everything he has planned into the hack..

But I guess on some level, that's a valid point. Yet on the other hand, it's been more than a year since his last demo, and lord knows how long it'll be until he's done. I don't think anyone will say, "gee, you spoiled this a year ago."

YES YOU ARE.

I would love to see this. 0_o;

If someone knows how to actually USE the ASM hacks you've implemented, I don't know if they would bother stealing them. And graphics are always a major concern, because there is no way to prevent someone from stealing them if they want to, but I haven't had a problem with that yet and I don't know if you would either.

I agree with Squash Monster that the one world demos we see so often are far from when a full hack will be released. I have enough new levels to make an full hack but I work on OW, graphics, on custom blocks and music.

I like demos, but I don't like being bombarded with them. More than that, I don't like that people release whatever they've got so far for a demo. I'd prefer to see a demo with less than what has been done so far, and preferably not all from one area. For example, I could release a one world demo when halfway done with my hack, using two levels or so from each world I've done.

I see three advantages to this type of system:
1 - Players won't recognize as many levels when playing the full hack.
2 - Players won't have to play through the same world again in the full hack.
3 - The demo is timed better in the production of the hack. The one world demos we see so often are far from when a full hack will be released.

It should depend on the hack. I like it the way FPI Productions did it with the demos from TSRP II. You can reuse old saves but not save states (of course, if anything more important got altered), you may play the world bit by bit, but it is also fun and better, since you can debug easier in a couple of demos than in one large full version.

I agree with Aioria, that you can release a few demos and then only show screenshots of your hack.

I love demos, but i guess the author of a hack should release only 3 or 4 of them. I already released 2, and my hack is not 4 worlds complete yet

If someone is really going to set aside the time to make a full hack, and they feel confident that they will finish the whole thing, then demos aren't really necessary. However, a lot of people lose interest in their hacks and discontinue them, so if it weren't for the demos, there wouldn't be too much for these hackers to show.

Ultimately, I feel that all these demos are not necessary, but I release them also because I am uncertain if I will finish my hack or not. If I had all the time in the world, I'd just whip through my hack and just release it when it's done, but unfortunately that's not the case. People have lives to, ya know.

The problem is not the demos; it is that there is a demo everytime someone adds one enemy to their game. I would like to be teased with a 1 world demo, and then you can release the rest when you're done. What's ridiculous is that people release 50 demos, so when the final version comes out, I've practically played the whole damned thing already.

Demos are good to guage the process of a hack, both for the hacker and the downloader. It's good to get opinions on the game in motion, rather than stationary screenshots.

However, tons of demos for a single hack are not necessary.

agreed. however I will be releasing my Demo within the next month (MAY) So I would say DEMOS are the best and you should download them...

Where did you get this idea from? Demos are always good, but don't go making 396 demos. Make just one, and after that, only screenshots.
Its not that they are getting boring, they are just getting overused. Like you said, 396 demos are not good.

With so many hacks out now-a-days.... there havent been MANY completed ones. Only demos it seems.

Everywhere you look around here, youll see a demo thread, or demo being released, but have any of these hacks ever been finished? Not really. Its gotten to the point where I feel there is a need for this poll, and what people think on the subject to clean up the "mess of demos," Im not saying that demos are a BAD thing. In fact, demos can be a great thing if your hack is simply spectacular. But demos are getting "old" now I feel.... and so now I ask people this.

To demo, or not to demo, that is the question. (Ugh, that is so lame.)
