I always have a strategy guide in front of me, but I don't read ahead for spoilers or read how to beat certain bosses and puzzles unless I'm totally stumped.

Yeah, as with most everyone here, I will only consult a stratagy guide after I have beaten the game. There's just no fun if you know how to beat a boss before you even get to it. Or if you know the exact way through a dungeon, which takes away from the exploration factor. It helps in RPG's to not know where you're going and get stuck for a while before you figure it out. A lot of leveling up can happen during that time.

And then, I've never actually owned a stratagy guide. I find gamefaqs.com to be a real help.

Never again. The waste of paper, HUGE pictures, little text, wasted page space, and every other sentence read:
"If you want the real answer to this puzzle, and need a super secret item, log on to PlayOnline to find out!"

YES. FUCK that was annoying. I'm still trying to figure out why my friend even BOUGHT that.

As for me, the last guide I bought was for SMRPG. Who needs to spend 15 bucks for each game you get stuck on when you can take a moment to zip over to GameFAQs and find what you're looking for in a matter of seconds... even then, I tend not to look at walkthroughs as much as I do documents on game mechanics, items, etc.

I use them only if...

1) I've beaten a game and want to see if I missed anything.
2) I'm totally stuck in a game - and that means I tried stuff, I didn't give up right away.
3) I'm in the middle of a game but haven't played it in a LONG time and need to refresh myself on what to do next.

I don't really see the need for a strategy guide, the only game I have ever used a stratgey guide with is FFX. But I didn't even need it to tell you the truth.

IF I get stuck in a game I will just consult gamefaqs.com

I only use Strategy Guides if I need help or if I just wanna get the secrets. That's probably about it, too.

I usually just skim the strategy guide to prepare myself for the "unknown"

Occasionally Ill beat the game on my own.... then bust out the guide...

I've got one rule of thumb when it comes to guides. I play them through the game a few times (around two to three), then I bust out the strategy guide and find everything I missed.

i only own one--the special edition of the FFX-2 strategy guide. I didn't use it at all when I played FFX-2 the first time and when I get around to playing FFX-2 again, i will definitely use it then...or will i?

but in short, i don't consult FAQs, Walkthroughts, Guides until i beat the game once...

I like to use them after I've beaten the game once, and then go back and find all the cool stuff I missed.

If I'm playing a game for a while, and I really like it, I'll usually invest in the guide, since they sometimes have extra things about it (interview with the creators, posters, etc.)

I only go with BradyGames, by the way.

Once in a while, there will be a level that I'll look to a strategy guide to, but for the most part I just do my thang.

The last time I bought and used a strategy guide was for SMB3. That was really long time ago, and it was before Internet was for everyone.

I don't remember even looking for the answer on gamefaqs when I get stuck on a game. Sometimes I don't even read the manual as there is some manuals with spoilers (but not many...), sometimes I wonder if manuals are needed.

But I do check out Gamefaq's after I finished a game. (and I do look on the forums for looking after things, you find intrseting information sometimes )

The game that I have read most guides and FAQ is strategy and simulation games. Like Simcity 4.

I never consult a strategy guide for hints on how to complete a game. I never need them and it ruins the game. Hell, I don't even read the whole of the manual until I'm a good way through a game.

I do, however, like to look at official strategy guides after completing a game as they can give you interesting insights (for example, the names of monsters that aren't named in the game or manual), and can reveal little things that you are likely to miss (such as how in one room of in the seventh dungeon of Link's Awakening you can throw a Gibdo down a pit and the game rewards you with a Fairy... Little things like that).

Of course, GameFAQs offers free solutions to problems if I ever actually get *stuck* in a game, which is very rare anyway.

If I'm playing a game for the first time, I usually look at the first few pages of a strategy guide to find out how to play it. However, I usually don't consult it again until either after I beat it or I'm stuck beating a level. But what about you guys -- how often do you consult a strategy guide -- if at all?
