I get the exact same problem when I try to run SMB and hacks on FCEU, so I just use JNes or RockNES for that. But for everything else, FCEU works flawlessly, and if you ask me, it's the best NES emulator around, apart from that shitty cheats system, that is. |

Also, are you sure it says, "0-1"? I don't remember there being a 0 for text in SMB. You sure it isn't O-1?
There's a zero. Otherwise, it'd be difficult to have them in the timer, coins, lives, or score. |

I might be selling RockNES short... it is a really good emu. I just always was wooed by NNNJ. I think they're about on par with each other in terms of accurace, but NNNJ has a ton of features and probably more mapper support (but don't quote me on that) |

Yeah, I noticed that when I got 1O coins once. |

The bottom line is nobody should be using NESticle anymore. Even on a very low-end computer, LoopyNES is probably a better option. And on low-medium end computers, the Nester family runs pretty quick.
FCEU, NEStopia, VirtuaNES, maybe Nessie <--- should be among the top in everybody's list. There's no 1 clearly superior emu, they all have their pros and cons and it ultimately comes down to user preference.
Nintendulator is in a league of it's own. It's definatly the absolute best at what it does... but what it does isn't exactly what most people are looking for. I wouldn't recommend it for casual play, but I don't want to leave it off this list... since it's so great.
Nester family (NNNesterJ etc) are a little older and a little more outdated, but are still "decent". However emulation quirks/bugs are obvious in several games (during my last few weeks of using NNNJ, they were becoming more and more glaring to me.. but then again I probably pay a little closer attention than most people).
RockNES family (RockNES X, etc) I'd put on a rung just below Nester family. They're good, but I don't think they quite stack up.
Various other semi-popular emus are around (namely: JNes) -- I'll NEVER understand why these are popular as they're not nearly as good as any other emu and completely lack features.
NESticle, when compared side-by-side with any modern (or semi-modern) emu will look like complete shit. Seriously... anyone still using it needs to give FCEU or something a try for 15 minutes -- you'll be blown away. |

Nesticle is outdated as hell, unless you have a old 486 there is no reason to use that emulator.
Fce ultra however is much more accurate, and dosen't have that ugly sound that nesticle is wellknown for.
I hadn't heard about the ROM that starts in World 0-1 though. I only heard about the titleless ROM.
I still use Nesticle but my FCE Ultra don't have DirectX at this time. FCEU is currently stated as a best emulator. |

Nah, you'd be better off with LoopyNES.

I've been using FCEU recently and it does pretty much everything I want it to. Use that with Nester and you're pretty much set.

I swear every time I used Nesticle it would either have messed up sound that anoyed me greatly or some other random undesireable buggyness. Im with the guy who uses NNNesterJ, it's got a nice interface with options that are easy to understand to anyone new to emulation and I have never had any problems with it. FCE Ultra is great too but it seems like it would be too complicated for someone who isnt familiar with emulators to figure out... |

The reason it doesn't work in newer emulators is because the newer emulators are accurate. NESticle just plain isn't. Disch explains it in better detail here. |

Personally, I don't like FCEU Ultra. Too many undocumented features. My personal choice is NNNesterJ. Hell, the original Nester worked at full speed on my Pentium 1, so maybe that's why I like it. Gameboy emulation also worked at full speed with BGB, although SNES (ZSNES) and Genesis (Gens) were slightly slow at times (not by much, though). |

NSNick, you probably can't patch an SMB1 hack onto an SMB1/Duck Hunt ROM. Depending how it's laid out, it might work, but I doubt it. |

It's popular because it was one of the best NES emulators 5 years ago, and certain people haven't bothered to upgrade since then. Then they go ahead recommending it to their friends, and we get this situation. |

I have a SMB rom that does that too, but my SMB/Duck Hunt rom works fine, so maybe try picking that up. |

Try doing a google search for "Super Mario Bros (JU) (PRG 1)". That's the clean version of the ROM that has a title screen and should start properly in 1-1. |

Before my files got all deleted I had a version of SMB1 that for some reason kept starting me off at World 0-1, and after I finished it (which was at Bowser's Bridge), it did the Princess Is In Another Castle thing and returned to the title screen. This version I remember had the title.
I went and downloaded another version so I could play Bowser vs. Wario; well, needless to say, though this version didn't have a title, it had the same effect. It sent me to World 0-1 at the start and that seemed to be the only world I could play at.
I was getting desperate so I popped "Super Mario Bros ROM" into Google, instead of just the generic "NES ROMs." First I came across one that required that I downloaded a downloader. I rejected that one. I then came across one with "Super KKK Bros." Surely, I figured, this one version (which did not have the title screen) would at least play through (considering that they have a whole walkthrough on the review page). I downloaded it and played it. World 0-1.
Now I'm thinking there's something wrong with my emulator. It's FCEU 0.98.12. Unfortunately, since my mass deletion, it's the only one I have bothered to download. And I'm not in the mood to download more. But still, somebody out there must be able to chime in on this and give advice.
