Well, so far no luck. The ROM is 60090 in size, and I started corrupting in increments of 5000. Now up to 48200, nothing what so ever was changed. Note that I was starting a new game, since first thing I'm looking for is level data. Now from 48200 to around 53000 or 55000 the game crashes. Then from 55000-60090 is random graphics. So the data must be in the corrpted area. Now all I have to do is see if I can find a part in the crashing area, isolate where it crases, and look there, correct?

You might find it helpful to start out at first finding data in a game that has already been hacked - that way, you'll know where you -should- be seeing things happen, and you'll know the sort of things to look out for when you're venturing into fresh waters.

Yes, most games have map headers and properties, like map sizes and all kinds of other properties, but different for each game. I used to corrupt roms to find data, but I never mastered it like Jigglysaint has (he corrupts and finds better than most people trace and find). If you can find where the game stores the maps in RAM, it's usually pretty easy to find the data in the ROM itself, especially if it's not compressed (even if it is, it's still pretty easy). Map headers would be pretty hard to find through random corruption, though not impossible. Your best bet would be to corrupt values in RAM untill you hit what you want, and then find out where it is in the file.

Map headers and the maps aren't always stored near each other though. I lucked out when playing with Paladin's Quest for SNES, the map headers were right before each map.

Allright. Now I know what a corruptor is and how to work with one. What I don't know is exactly what I should look out for. The game in question is the original Fire Emblem (or Gaiden, the second one) for the NES. I wanted to find out as much about the game as I can.

Basically, how do I tell where and how things work. Like say I found some map tile data. Do most games have something like a header for the maps (xy size, pallete used, ect...)? I've never tried anything of this sort, but I'd like to try in the near future.
