Personally, I don't even play demos. I just comment on the screenshots. In the case of a graphic-only hack, they're essentially one and the same, unless there are cool animated effects the images don't show (and you can always use GIF).

While I'm not denying I acted like a mod, I didn't mean to act like a mod. I was just really mad and Disch really needs to stop flaming everyone. I'm sorry, but It's starting to turn into the War on Terror! Again, I'm sorry. I said it wrong. But I was to freaking mad to TURN ON A LIGHT after I read his latest thread.

Here's how I meant to say it:

Now Disch, stop it. I'm tired of you flaming everybody! It wasn't his fault his hack was stickyed! True, his hack was "unfilled", not transparent, but do you think everybody knows that ? Please stop cussing Mr. "OMG mario's penis is big 999 stars!!!". Nobody likes porno hacks! Just... just stop being mean and stop attacking the people who made the freaking hack. And stop posting new threads to insult old ones. I yi yi.

I quit!

Cat Lover, it doesn't matter if you're a newcomer or a demi-god, acting like a mod is against the rules, read 'em.

I'll agree. The hack got quite a bit of unneeded praise compared to many others. I wouldn't exactly agree with the NEGATIVE response that this seems to have triggered, but... there's other, more notable hacks out there, more deserving of praise. This isn't a bad hack that we're discussing here, though. Just a simple one that got more praise than it should have in comparison to some others here.

The nice thing about simplistic graphics hacks is that you can completely evaluate them in two seconds just by looking at the screens. You don't even need to apply the patch.

People don't reply as much to postings with really good hacks because they have to take the time to download a patch, patch the ROM, and play the hack.

I'm willing to bet most of us download all the interesting patches we see and play them all after we've done our rounds of the forums: by the time you get through a round of hacks, you may not remember who the author of the hack was, what thread you found it in, or anything like that. And half the time, it takes so long to have the time to finish playing a hack that the thread will be dead and burried.

If people want good hacks to get more attention, then I think people will have to fix all those problems.

Specifically:
-- Continue stickying good hack threads. Leave them stickied for at least a few days.
-- Put the name of your hack and what game it's for at the start of the thread title. Don't title it "Presenting what I've been working on for the last few weeks... Mario Goes Skydiving!". Title it "SMB: Mario Goes Skydiving". People who are skimming are exponentially more likely to skip to the next thread title with every word they don't care about. Nobody cares about the words "presenting", "what", "I've", "been", "working", "on", "for", "the", "last", "few" or "weeks".
-- Put the correct name of the hack in the IPS patch file name. A patch titled "suprmarhack.ips" isn't going to help anyone remember which hack it was or who you were when they're trying to find where to put feedback.
-- Make a clear, easy to read title screen with the title of the hack and your user name.
-- If you're a hack author, stop changing your user name so bloody often.

So, when things are bad, we should not try to point out that they are bad, let alone try to make them not bad?

That rather ties into the whole point Disch was making to begin with, on how we "need" to be nice to newbies and never criticise them.

If you're so complacent as to simply accept it when things are bad, how exactly do you expect things to get not bad? Also, bear in mind that just because you accept it doesn't mean everyone does.

Impala was simply giving his view on the matter. As you can tell, he's satisfied with the situation and doesn't feel the need to try and make things better... Or maybe he just think it's a hopeless cause, and would rather spend time on something else than arguing over this, who knows.

That said, I kinda understand you... I think this "little" community shouldn't be like those video game magazines or TV shows that suck, promote shitty games (because the company making those give them money for that), etc... (Note : This is NOT an indirect attack to Shane 26)
We are people who truly like video games, we aren't there for the money... So we should be closer to reality than those lame magazines and TV shows I mentioned (although there are exceptions everywhere, I mean I'm aware some of them are actually good).

Personally, I'm not "envious" of Shane because of the attention and responses he got with his Super Mario Transparent hack or anything like that, especially since we got more than enough attention too. I've really got no negative feelings toward him. He shouldn't have been bashed or flamed for what he did... He did nothing wrong really. Everyone doesn't have the same goals, as much time to spend on a hack, or the same ambitions... So he does stuff he likes, and that's it. The drama surrounding his hacks is another thing though.
However, I guess he probably made that mono Mario hack because of how well his transparent hack was received... And not because it was a project that really meant anything to him. That's just my take on it though.

As for Impala and myself, we aren't there because we are craving for attention or anything like that... We simply have fun making our hack, and by releasing it we'll just share what we did, but we're making it for ourselves in the first place, not for others. However, I don't deny that reading people's anticipation for our hack is also a source of motivation for us.

I'm done ranting, I just typed too much there...

Oh wow that's just fine...I add my second "innocently" positive post on the Super Mario Transparent thread, but just AFTER posting I find this thread... Yeah, just fine... /end sarcasm

The M64 thread is taking enough time of my life as it is, I usually don't take the time to read the other threads here these days, unless something stands out or deals with my favorite games (which are few).

In the first positive comment I posted in the SMB transparent thread, I took the time to explain that while I saw many very neat level and graphic hacks, I liked this one too even if it need much less work.

I don't have time to congratulate everyone for all the great hacks that get published these days. I'm very impressed by what many do here but I just don't have the time even look at them, even less post a comment on each of them.

I'm an older gamer, I have different tastes and a different nostalgia about very specific games, so while a complete level and graphic hack for Final Fantasy 1 deserves praise, if it's only for the effort involved, I simply doesn't see myself posting a comment on a FF1 thread simply because the game doesn't mean anything to me, as I'm not an RPG fan and played the game for at most 30 minutes in my whole life.

I can understand that not everyone can see a value in the result of SMB transparent, but it seems that people "on the other side" cannot understand why others could have other tastes. Some of you in this thread, including Disch seem to attack (maybe indirectly) anyone that posted positive comments on the other thread by saying it's the worst hack ever and things like that.

The problem is that your frustration comes from the number of people that posted positive things on this particular thread, compared to threads on much more evolved hacks. Well nobody here in particular decided the number of people that would post positive things there. Blaming each of the individuals is the wrong thing to do. If only one person posted a positive comment about this one, we wouldn't have this thread...

What do you expect with your rant Disch? That everyone will be afraid to post positive things on hacks that require less than 50 hours to do and that automagically only "good" extensive hacks will be posted here?

Unless something in the rules forbids a hack like SMB transparent to be posted, it shouldn't work like that: angry mobs of users trying to impose what type of hacks should receive positive comments.

How about making a sticky: "Don't post positive things about an easy concept hack, or some user will get angry and start a thread that all the other angry users users will join to blast your post"

I guess that the fact that the "other thread" was posted as a sticky for some period of time didn't help things, I never thought it was a good idea to make it a sticky, but I thought "the mods are always right". I would have posted in the thread if hasn't been a sticky anyway, because I'm dumb it seems

So muchos gracias, have a good night.

This may be a off-topic question, but does liking that make me gay? And for the record, I don't like Bridget...

But really, I kinda have a "If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all," approach to these threads. But when shit of that caliber gets stickied! You may as well have given the megaman ultra a sticky, it'd be more worthwile... At least the guy had some original level graphics... (Edit: I think.)

Bisexual, not gay (it's not just one or the other, you can be both, ya?)-- particularly if you like it because it's a guy-- unless you're so enchanted by the avatar you don't even like the female form anymore.

Personally, I don't care how much mediocrity there is out there, or how often people stick with mediocre things instead of great things; yes, that's the way things are, mediocrity so often prevails over greatness, but I do not think that that's the way it ought to be.

There is solace to be found, however, in simply finding joy in doing things rather than depending on others to approve; doing it is its own reward, and that's the approach you've taken, and it is also the approach I take. I've done tons of stuff I've never released (mainly for lack of completeness, which in turn comes from lack of motivation), but I've nevertheless found joy in doing them.

I do, of course, enjoy it when others praise my work (what little of it I release!), but that's not the reason I do it: having done it is satisfaction enough, having it praised is simply even better.

So I suppose, in the end, those who do it for the joy of doing it are-- at least in theory-- immune to the fact that a lot of stupid people won't be paying it a great deal of attention in favor of more mediocre works; but that doesn't prevent them from observing that fact.

Honestly, I suggested peter_ac's hacks should have gotten stickied. I played tons of hacks WAYYYYYYYYYY better then mine but don't blame me if those hacks didn't get stickied.
If you don't like my hacks then fine with me! Don't pay attention to it if you don't like it.
Even I don't know how it got so much attention. Just leave it go!!!!!!!!!!!!! JEEZ!!

I think Disch directed his post towards the people who acclaimed your hack and gave it a lot of attention despite being only a GFX hack. I wouldn't take it as a personal attack. The hack wouldn't get so much negative attention if there weren't so much semi-honest positive attention to begin with. And that's not really your fault.

Well at least he understands the true purpose of ROM hacking. If you think your creation is good, who cares what everyone else says?

I seriously think that if you really do put a ton of effort into your hack and you have something extremely fun to play and well put together, it will definitely get noticed. I mean, all the really great hackers around here: BMF, peter_ac, DD, JJ, etc do get enough attention around here, and just because one pretty effortless hack got some attention is nothing to go completely crazy over. I certainly don't think it deserves as much attention as it's getting, but I think the stickyness of the thread might be attracting people to it, and the fact the DD decided to do this might make people trust his judgement.

My final point being...

Great hacks most of the time will get their well deserved attention.

I seriously don't know why a lot of people have enjoyed SMB Transparent, but when something much better comes along it will definitely blow it out of the water.

Newflash: Life isn't fair.

You don't hear me bitching about how little attention my hacks get. It's the nature of the beast, lads. Deal with it. It is very rare that a hack is showered with replies/attention where, whether it deserves it or not.

*taps keyboard wondering what to say*

Well... I just threw sand in my own face and violated what I was admonishing you lot for. Bit-Blade sucks for teh win.

"That's because he does a 5 minute effort and those people who make a huge effort to make a good hack (I'm looking at impala and stifu) are basically ignored. I can't really see how that is fair. just how is 5-minute-effort > huge-long-effort?"

Yeah, because the quality of the product is completely dependent on how much attention it gets from a singular community. Oh wait, I forgot, the only people who care about that are the attention-whores. Ih that sense, this thread has been more than helpful.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
