Mine was a Microsoft keyboard as I said.

It might be an OS problem, but still... Like I said, it's happened maybe 4-5 times since I got the new PC, but it's extremely annoying.

Wonder if I could just unplug/plug the keyboard in next time it happens and see if Plug and Play picks it up...

Also, since this happened both with a Logitech wireless thingy keyboard (which has its own drivers installed) and a generic keyboard labeled "IBM" - and it's likely Colin has a different brand too - and we both have WinXP - it's probably a problem on the OS's end. But I don't really know what I'm talking about, so I'll just give you the facts. Okay, they're up there. ^

Yeah, but after the strokes repeat, the keyboard then freezes up.

The drivers seem to be fine but I'll try a reinstall of them and see what happens.

Repeating keystrokes? Your drivers might be messed.

The exact same thing happens to me! It's happened three times in as many days. I thought it was my wireless keyboard, but I exchanged it for a regular one after the second time and it just happened again (i'm using on-screen keyboard... unpleasant). It also sorta repeats the last few keystrokes, which is probably causing the beeping. It also makes this sort of thing happen in AIM:

CCut Chemistt: I'm actually making these for this other guy... he made the multiviola and the yard, and I made all the others, g, heh
CCut Chemistt: I'm actually making these for this other guy... he made the multiviola and the yard, and I made all the others, h, hg, heh

CCut Chemistt: , hehade all the others,
CCut Chemistt: , hehhe others,

I was trying o delete it near the end there as it got repeatedly entered into the send area, which sort of worked, but increased the beeping. Of course, when itfinished its rampage the keyboard stopped working. The numlock light is on, and if I press any of the lock keys on screen, te lights on the keyboard respond accordingly. But the keys theselves do nothing. Okay, I've done enough clicking on keys. I'm restarting.

yeah, it is probably defective hardware since keyboards have been around forever and the fundamental design of a keyboard has yet to change in a very long time.

anyways, do what Tomguy says and exchange the keyboard. if that fails, hopefully you can buy the same keyboard and do a "swap," that is what I did for my DVD+/-RW when it broke after 6 weeks.

I'm not totally sure if that's it though...

*holds down Ctrl for 30 seconds*

See, no freezing. I know this happened once or twice with my old keyboard on the old PC but for all I know that was just my Compaq being a POS.

This might explain it, but it's pretty useless.

Sounds like a bad keyboard - your BIOS is getting confusing/conflicting signals, thus the beeping. Try returning it for a new one, see if that helps. If you can't, buy the same model keyboard, try it for a week and if it works, return the one you have now in that box and say it screws up!

Quite a strange bug. This happens rarely (maybe once/twice a week) but it's annoying as hell.

Microsoft Internet Keyboard, latest drivers/software... and of course there has to be problems with it. Basically at random times (Hitting/holding down a key too long? Seems to have problems with Ctrl being held for a long time), I get a few beeps from my PC, keyboard won't respond, and that eventually leads to a forced restart.

Any ideas? I checked the interrupts and all that, and there's no conflicts...
