Simple: 40 twisted pairs. I can't tell you exactly why this works, but it is what they use to keep crosstalk out of Cat5 cables, and it works well for speeds of 1000MBPS so why not a HD cable?  |

I wonder...how come those newfangled rounded cables don't have interference problems? All they are is a standard 80-conductor cable crunched up and shoved into a narrow rubber tube. You'd think the data lines would get squished together and cause problems...  |

Actually, I don't think those carry any signal at all (no ground), but I could be wrong. But yes, for speeds higher than IDE33 (for 66, 100, or 133) you need an 80-pin cable, newer HDs will be severly restricted without one. |

In other words, get an UltraATA/UltraDMA IDE cable (it'll say "Ultra" somewhere). As mrmenz mentioned, it'll have 80 wires instead of 40. I think it's the only kind they sell in stores anymore, so it shouldn't be hard to find. |

It simply means that the ribbon cable your using for your secondary IDE channel has 40 wires. All of which are being used for data, rather than the normal 80 which uses 40 for data and the other 40 for ground to prevent interference and crosstalk. |
