Ah, I would have never thought of that 3D solution, but it does work ... and I just noticed mine has 4 small triangles and 2 bigger ones, for a total of 6 |

One match per side, three matches in the middle... lotsa triangles.... did you want EXCTLY four? |

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. They must be the same size. Hmm... That seems to be 4 triangles, Acmlm, so I guess you win. However, that wasn't the solution I was thinking about.
Make a triangle first.

Then it's not 2D any more. Think in three dimensions.
Build a pyramid on top of it. 3 sides and one bottom. 4 triangles. |

Hmm, do they all need to be the same size, and form nothing else than 4 triangles (no lines exceeding)? Because in Disch's above, the top middle one is a little shorter than the rest ...
I found another solution that should work:

here's a crude picture of my answer:
/|\ / | \ ----- \ / \ / V
there's 2 smaller triangles in the top section. Those two combined make a 3rd triangle, and the one at the bottom is the fourth. |

Here's a problem for you. Take 6 matches. Try to make 4 triangles without breaking any of the matches. |
