a crossover cable and a cat 5 cable have different schematics:
normal CAT-5 cable has pin 1,2,3,6 of one end matching up to pin 1,2,3,6 of the other end
Crossover CAT-5 has pin 1,2,3,6 of one end matching up to pin 3,6,1,2 of the other end.

Usually when I see a Win98 computer using networking, it has the other login prompt, with the Domain box. Neither will do it, though. I can try exchanging the cable on Monday. I can build a simple voltmeter to test the cable, but how do I tell which type it is from that? |

although, it is virtualized, I have the same settings for another computer with win98 dual boot... if you have similarities, then I\'m certain it is the cable. |

it could be the case that you don\'t have a crossover cable...unless you test for how the wires line up, you won\'t really know for sure. You even doubt whether you have one or not...
Something else that is required for win98 to connect to a network is you must \"logon\" to the network. If win98 starts up without asking you for a password (even if it is blank), it will not connect to the network. You must click on Okay, not cancel. Have you installed TCP-IP Protocol support? |

I don't think it's the cable... I tried both. Neither works for connecting the computers together, and both work for connecting the modem. I might just install XP on both... how well would it run on a P233 with 192MB RAM? there is a schematic for crossover cables and normal CAT-5 cables. try using that...thing which you can measure voltage, resistance, etc (i'm blanking on the name  ) to see if the right pins on one side land on the correct side for the other. |

Hmm... Windows XP isn't very friendly when it comes to networks, either.
My best bet would be to use a separate router between the two computers. Or if you have a spare computer and spare network cards, shove three cards into an old computer, put FreeSCO on it, and you should be fine there... |

You also have to consider that 98 was not designed for networks in mind. I've seen it properly set up, work one day, and for no reason whatsoever, no changes at all, it would stop working. Then there were times when it shouldn't have worked, but did anyway. But from experience, the XP machine must be the host. Given that it's 98, you may need a hub or switch to get this configured properly, but don't quote me on that. I was thinking about the cross-over cable, but neo already brought that up. |

Yeah, same kind I used to connect the modem. (Cable modems do use crossover cables right? ) If not, I'll have to yell at the guy I bought it from, because that's what I asked for. |

I dunno why but I've never managed to get these to connect to eachother. Right now I've got this computer (XP) with 2 network cards, one connected to the cable modem and the other connected to the other computer (98); no router or switch or anything, just directly connected. (I checked that it's the right type of cable, tried another, etc.) Either computer can connect to the Internet if the modem is connected directly to it. On the XP system, only one card will do this; the other never powers up and reports that it's unplugged. This would seem to indicate that it doesn't work, but that's not all. If I connect the 98 system to the card that does work, the cards stil won't power up. It just keeps saying the cables are unplugged. I've tried pretty much every option; the only thing I haven't done is making this a domain controller and having the other one log into it, because I can't. Any time I try to set this one's domain it starts looking for a domain controller. There doesn't seem to be any way to make it one.  I've tried putting them both on the same workgroup, using all different kinds of connections, etc; they won't even connect through the parallel port (they don't see eachother).  |
