Darius, Gradius and all the 19XX series are all up there along with...Aero Fighters!! I'm told I have twitch skills but often times I wonder how good I really am... I haven't seen another person play a shooter in a while, so I can't compare.

Except I seem to remember this jungle game where you shot dinosaurs or something.

That game's called Prehistoric Isle (don't remember if it's prehistoric or prehistorik)
You can get it as a mame rom (don't ask me where obviously, at least if it's in a PM )

And for shooters, i liked so much playing Slap Fight, it had powerups, like laser, bombs and homing missiles, pretty good

Isn´t the name DoDonPachi. I downloaded a game with that name.

Giga Wing and Dragon Gun are also awesome.

I think I have Aero Fighters on MAME... I have quite a few shooters actually. Should check out some of the late-era CPS2 ones as well.

Zero Wing was OK. Not a great shooter but above average for sure.

R-Type forever. I used to play tons of shooters in MAME, but I swear, I forgot every one. Except Metal Slug. <3

Quit lieing .

Zero Wing was actually a fun shooter, it just gets bashed so much because of AYB.

Personally, I haven't played that many shooters, but I've played some like R-Type, and some generic "YOU'RE AT WAR WIT THESE GAUYS GO SHOOT THEM" "OK LOL" things, for free at the arcade . Heh, free arcade at the orthodontist <3

Gradius 3 and R-Type 3 are the best shooters on the SNES.
Thunder Force IV is without a doubt the best Mega Drive shooter, and also the best 16-bit one.
There were plenty of shooters on the NES but not many that could really stand out, except Recca which was extremly impressive. Everyone should check this game out, it's intense like shit for a NES game with tons of on-screen enemies and effects with practicly no slowdown.

Overall I was pretty disappointed with the stuff available for 32-bit platforms. Thunder Force 5 was a huge, huge letdown. I also tried that PS1 Darius, but I never liked that series at all. I have yet to try R-Type Delta. For now Einhänder is the best game from that era, it suprised me that Square could make a great shooter like that. They should stop milking the FF7 cashcow and concentrate their efforts on a new shooter.

Since I don't own any next-gen I haven't played any of the new shooters like Gradius V or R-Type Final which is a shame. I do own Ikaruga though. Strangely I didn't find it very entertaining at all, in spite of being a big Treasure fan.

I think Run 'n Gun is a better term for more platform-based games like Contra, Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes as they are pretty different from their spaceship counterparts. I urge you all to check out Batman & Robin for Mega Drive which shares many similiarities with Gunstar Heroes. The graphics are extremly impressive, the gameplay is great, and the music eats hand-grenades for breakfast and rapes your mom at the same time. The only thing that stops it from being truely excellent is the pacing, some levels like the flying part are much too drawn out. Nevertheless, it's the best Batman game I've played, better than the NES one.

I have played too many sidescrollers to list. All of them are pretty decent.

I have tons of them for MAME. Aero Fighters included.

haha, i've been playing gradius 3 arcade and that game is crazy hard!

i thought that was bad... the moai stage was pretty hellish.. i never had time to screencap anything!

i've heard about the thunderforce games, but i've never tried them.
and i've never played contra hard corps, either
oh yeah, and i didn't even think about FPS games.. that's not what i was referring to when i made the thread, haha.
colin, you should check out Aero Fighters. I think it's on neo geo, and there's also a SNES port. Very fun when 2 player, too.

Poor Kas. Owning (apparently) one of the best shooters out there and never playing it.

I'm more of an old-school shooter fan... Space Invaders, Galaga, Xevious... XD

OK, that's a bit silly. But maybe stuff like Gradius and Parodius. I can't handle ten million bullets on the screen at once.

I own both Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun. I still haven't got around to getting my Saturn switched, or buying a converter, so I've never even played the latter

I have played Ikaruga though. I got all the way to the second level

I heart shmups.

Not just because they're fun to play, but because they're fun to program.

I really aught to get around to packaging up my old one into something I can show y'all.

Dude, we're talking sidescrolling-classic-real-shooters here, not FPS's.

Anyways, what is the hardest shooter you guys have ever played? My vote goes to Contra: Hard Corps, or Thunder Force III.

I actually thought Zero Wing was pretty decent.

R-Type is a great series, but I personally favor the Gradius series over it. Just the flow of the game, the gameplay with powerups and everything, and the music seems better.

The Turrican series has also been one of my long time favorites since the arcades, and earlier consoles.

If you haven't played any of the R-Type games, I'd recommend you check out R-Type 3 for the SNES, way better than Super R-Type (which was like a poor port of R-Type 2).

But like I said, I think the Gradius games are a little better. Gradius III is freaking incredible.

The Thunder Force series (for the Genesis) is also very good, just extremely hard ...
