No you wouldn't. Just select 'All Files' from the filetype, open the .bin file, make the tile window really small (for small files like ExGFX), go to View -> Format and click whatever format you want.

You would have to get the the hacked version TLP Fixed to look at Bins properly. You can get it at sonicology.fateback.com just look in the download index.

It's view -> format -> SNES, just to be perfectly clear. If it gives you an error about the scrollbar, try shrinking the tile window (reduce its height as much as possible) and try again.

Try learning the program by yourself before you start asking questions, it's not as hard as it seems.

Also, it seems ROM Graphix can't open BIN fies.

With Tile Layer Pro (look at the commmons) you can export parts of the .bin file into .bmps and/or import .bmps into your .bin... I suppose that, by the thread tile, that's waht you want to know

GFX are already limited to 16 colors anyway, aren't they? I don't see how such a limit would be a problem. I'm only working with about 10 colors here, and I can easily switch those around.

Anyway, your help is appreciated.

Try ROM Graphix. It converts between quite a few different formats.

Converting from higher bits IS possible, but I'd rather spend my time actually hacking than writing algorithms for such a thing. Something to keep in mind is that Super Nintendo graphics (and indeed, most classic systems) and bitmaps are in wildly different formats, so it's a lot easier to want a converter than it is to make one.

Some tile editors already have built in converters for common formats. I know YY-CHR has a very basic system, and I think Tile Molester can do it quite well, but I've never bothered with these functions.

I'm just a bit miffed because I just lost hours of work I did trying to make a level background using the bizarrely unintuitive GFX editor included in Lunar Magic, and I absolutely refuse to manually redraw each of the 128 8 by 8 tiles that have since been lost to the sands of time. I'm wondering if there's some kind of BIN editor, or preferably something that converts BIN files into a format where I can just copy and paste everything into place and then convert it back so I can redo this in maybe 20 minutes. Has this been done? Is something like this even possible?
