My 17" was a graphics standards monitor a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro, but I can't remember what refresh rate I used to have it on. I do remember that I bought it specifically for it's graphics features.
My 20" is a graphics standards monitor too, but then, it's an Apple....  I should borrow a graphics calibrator from work and calibrate it. |

Ah...I have an A90f+. If I'm not mistaken, yours is a "Graphics Series" monitor, and thus is a couple of steps above mine, capability-wise (mine's "all-purpose," I guess). I can go up to 1600x1200, but only at 60Hz. Not that I ever go above 1024x768@100Hz anyway... |

I used to do 1600x1200 on my 17". It was good, but nobody else in the house liked it so once my machine became the "shared' machine, it got dropped down to 1024x768.
I can't remember what my resolution is on my 20" widescreen monitor... oh well. |

My original one went on me with about 1 month left in the warranty. Shipped it to ViewSonic, got a refurb back. It works perfectly fine but... the anti-glare coating is starting to come off the screen in 2 or 3 spots! It drives me nuts. 
Anyway, in case you didn't notice, I said something about my resolution...
1600x1200 at 75 Hz.
Try doing that on a 17" monitor without losing your eyesight from squinting. Or even worse, a 15" one.
I can do 2048x1536, but only 60Hz, which really hurts my eyes. |

The bigger the monitor, the higher resolution you can use without squinting.  Personally I want one of those projectors that let you use an entire wall as a screen... can't spare $3000 for it though.  |

Very much so. Larger monitors allow for higher resolutions, at least that's how it is today. Not sure about back then. I hate being stuck at 1280x1024 when even video cards from when my monitor was built (2000) allow 2048x1536. |

I have a 19" ViewSonic, and I'm very happy with it. Anything bigger would just seem like overkill (and probably wouldn't fit in the monitor space on my desk anyway). |

Hell yeah there's a reason that people should have 21" monitors. 
I used to have one that big at a company I worked at where we had to display large documents on the screen.

Is there any reason ANYONE should have a 21" monitor? No, really. I've got one sitting here, looks to be about ten years old and still in working condition. Can't hook it up yet as the cable isn't attached and I got the wrong one (got an extension cord instead of a VGA cable). |
