Let's also not forget global warming; especially the lesser known thawing of Siberia and melting of the Ganges' glaciers. Both within the century.

Nah, but the stubborn ones are the ones that just don't make sense. What do they hope to hang on to? The ruins of a house that is now merely floading debris in the Gulf of Mexico or the bowl of water that New Orleans has become? Their few remaining belongings that they seem to feel are more important than their lives? Really, it simply doesn't make sense. =/

Leg, (without having read AIlure's link, as it's late), I believe that while aid hasn't been refused, it also hasn't been accepted yet. Or that's what I remember reading in the newspaper, which could've been wrong, but...

As for the actual topic at hand, I've heard contradictory reports. It's possible the concern is pride, or possibly that it's dangerous to try to take wealth out of nations poorer than yourselves.

Let's also not forget the recent flooding in India where hundreds of thousands of people died. And of course, disease spread. And more recently, the encephalitis outbreak in the Utter Pradesh region. Don't compare it to the ones over here, because it simply doesn't match up.

This may be helpful Legion.

I'm not surprised on the response. Countries have been sending help like this before, like when that tsunami hit Thailand. (Which is the worst natural disaster that hit the Swedish population ever. Due to the amount of Swedish tourists down there :/)

I don't quite have the time to dredge up a link right now Leg, but I remember vividly today one of the student papers having an article quoted from an Argentinian newspaper regarding this event. I think it was a Red Tory paper, but I can't be sure.

well, from what I've heard, Canada has said "If you need our help, just ask"

not much more than that.... otherwise I've heard nothing.... but it is Canada.... the news bias is pretty bad up here

I'm sorry, but could someone provide a link or two on the refusal of outside support? I can't find anything on CNN.com or google and I haven't heard of anything like that on the news.

maybe I'm a little confused.... but when was any of this Bush's fault?

cause you all talk like this problem is his....

well, let's make something simple.... these people knew this was coming.... they had the chance to get out, and they chose to stay.... what happened isn't Bush's fault.... it was their own fault for staying there and getting stuck in it

and don't act like those people are poor becuase of Bush. He hasn't been around long enough to be the cause of poverty in the area.

EDIT: On a happier note, due to pressure from religious and civil rights groups, and the efforts of the mayor of New Orleans, Bush has decided to increase the aid to $150 billion.

Okay... or you know, the first value was a preliminary aid package. I have this horrible feeling you're biased in a way that's really clouding your mental facilities. Remember, extremism is a bad thing, no matter what side you're on. ;o

Still, Ziffy (may I call you Ziffy? or do you prefer Old Witch?)... The Cuban and Venezuelian offers have to be some kind of joke!! As if the Bushies would accept anything from Fidel or Chavez. Funny old geezers...

Still wondering why they won't accept our aid, though.

Cuba wanted to send thousands of doctors and Venezuela wanted to send 11 million dollars and a huge amount of gasoline (already refined!). Of course, The Rice shot it all down. The White House LUUUUUUUUUURVES THE POOR!

And I suppose you think this administration will not think twice about WHO is offering the help, and what they might be expecting from the U.S. government in future talks? These countries don't expect anything in return, I suppose, but it's still about having better ties with the U.S. and in particular this administration. Now you can be sure the answers of the Bush administration regarding these offers will have less to do with real needs than with foreign affairs, diplomacy or the lack of it.

The president is also worried about what kind of image he's sending to the rest of the world. If they start accepting all aid, even though there is need, the U.S. will look like a third-world country. It already does!! If you don't think all this comes into play - and I do think it's wrong - then you are deluding yourself. That's not to say the federal government is not doing its job, but politics are politics.

I'm not saying it would be otherwise if Kerry was in power or something. But you're asking me to forget about politics and government in a time of humanitarian crisis. Well you can tell THAT to the administration!! They're the ones making the important decisions, saving lives OR letting people rot down there in New Orleans!

As for the foreign aid not being news in the United States, that's the usual problem with the media. It's as if the rest of the world doesn't exist. Over 40 industrialized nations have offered aid, as well as poor countries who are usually on the receiving end. It's in all the papers. Maybe not on CNN or FOX News, though.

Yeah, all I've heard about foreign support is the refusal from Canada. I wonder if they'll even except support. I didn't even expect them to get any offers for aid

The only things I have read up on aid from other countries was the US's refusal to let Canada help - here.

Where the hell have you been?
Tons of countries have offered help, but Condie said they'll just wait and see before they accept "the best offers". It's all about big politics and diplomacy.

And have you already forgotten about Sept. 11? The world was there for Americans on that day. But the U.S. have acted like such bullies since then, I would consider the rest of the world sending ONE CENT to be a significant gesture of compassion!!

Compassion for Americans run by such a lousy administration it can barely support its own country in a time of crisis. Who was the president when Osama bin Laden threatened to attack American soil, and then slammed to jet planes in the WTC? Oh that's right, he was reelected in 2004...

Anyway, look for "foreign aid" on Google, there's plenty of information.

Why should the US pay other countries any support when they have a natural disaster?
