"Help me" =/= "Do it for me".

I'm a blithering idiot and I know that much . And I think "your own damned self", just sounds better. I think this board is already kind of intimidating, then again, something subtle won't get this obviously key point to n00bs.

My humble suggestion is a page once you press the "new thread" button in the romhacking section that says:

"Are you going to make a request for someone to do a romhack for you?? If yes, you will be IP banned and BURNED ALIVE.
Is this a request for someone to do a romhack for you?

Will go to: (http://board.acmlm.org/index.php?ipbanned=1)
Will go to: (http://board.acmlm.org/newthread.php?id=x)
Will go to: (http://board.acmlm.org/index.php)"

Maybe they'll read something at least THIS intrusive and short.

(sorry, the buttons don't work )

Edits:
#1-Added the buttons
#2- Weird spelling error O_o

I think his point is more how it appears. I'm sure he knows what we all mean, but he's saying it looks bad. I actually kind of agree -- I'm still baffled as to why this got stickied.

xZeaLitYx seems to have the biggest objection with this thread... but ironically he was the first to reply with a "this thread rocks" pic. Go figure.

Sarcasm. I mean...look at that guy in the pic. He's hilarious!

Yes, my main complaint is the appearance. The thread title itself is telling newbies to fuck off and go make their own hack; you can't fit in something specific as "Don't blindly post requests for hacks; check out utilities & documentation, or ask if anyone else is currently rom hacking a game." The title seems to attack the very concept of asking for help period. It's also staggeringly crude, and this reflects badly on the whole community.

With such a spammful tendency as so many acmlmers have, it's no wonder no one has the patience to read through posts. What a fatal mistake to take away posting speed so... fatally!

Honestly, I noticed that in my own thread, Setzer. Fucking got a hint as clear as day and all you see is "oh ones!"

How can I miss the point, when I made the point? You may understand what I have to say, but I garuntee someone else will come in here flaming me for telling people not to ask for help. It's a known fact that 75% of the people who attend this board will not read anymore than the last five posts of a thread.

No one on the thread is missing the point, you are. You are the only one I think, that has been posting this and arguing with people trying to get help, what is wrong with that.

AP, I love everything about that post. except the request via PMs, email, AIM part. Most new people comign in wouldn't know who to IM or whatever, and might IM a bad card like me, who'll say "bug off"

And for all the people, who're missing the point of this thread [Points seem to be missed a lot at this board]

we're not telling people to stop asking for help, we're telling people to stop asking for us to do things for them.

Does that make it any more clear?

Hmmm....Should this be unstickied and replaced by a better one?
Something like this, but I don't think it'll be used, though :
If you want to make a request:
1. Read the stickies, search the web, or search the threads with Google (words you want to find and "site:board.acmlm.org") first to check if what you want already exists.
2. It's recommended that you have a good posting record
3. You should do it politely and nicely (i.e., thank you, etc.)
4. You should not do it rudely
5. Make it as detailed as possible
6. Make yourself sound as not "noobish", annoying, or obnoxious as possible
7. It is recommended that you are at least an intermediate hacker (not newbie) to post a request.

It is not recommended to request with a thread, though. You should request via PMs, email, AIM, or any other way of contact, instead, unless it is a level or GFX competition (or anything similar).

Oh, and the title to not have profanity like this one. But if this would be used, I'm pretty sure some things would need to be added or edited, though.

jease man, why do you have to have an attitude about people asking about request. They ask because they don't know where or they already search for it and they need help finding it. So don't overreact when people need help. I have recently seen this post a couple of times and I had to read what was going on this time. They did not say they needed everybody's help, but the people who want to help. So if you don't like it, back away then.

I would make an insightful comment on this thread, but I fear I'll be sucked beyond the event horizon of idiocy.

I suggest we change the theme from profanity to... um...

What beats profanity again?

Oh yeah! VIOLENCE!

Say, like, "If You Make A Request Thread, We Will Kick Your Spleen Out Via Your Sternum."

Or something. < /sarcasm>

You know, blackhole89, IMO, this is really degenerative to the rom hacking society. I seriously don't like this thread title, especially since it has the F-word in it. This will simply drive away people who want to learn about rom hacking, and God knows what my parents will do if they catch a glimpse of this thread title. Someone PLEASE change it to something modest.

Maybe if you kinda read this whole thread, you'd realise we're not telling people to stop asking for help, we're telling people to stop asking for us to do things for them. I'm all for helping someone. But fuck 'em if they want to be assholes and whine because I wont make their hack for them.

I bolded it because I was hoping you'd notice that. should I have put it in all caps too?

Zeality, they were in now way targeting hackers like yourself. If you bothered to read threads besides the Temporal Flux one you'll see lots of people just begging for someone to fix their hack or help them with easy shit problems that could be solved by just tinkering around a few minutes or reading an FAQ / Readme. Research problems first, ask questions only when stumped, I say.

Something tells me the title wouldn't of been put in all caps and made so noticable if you guys didn't make a big fuss on yourself. Same reason most of you suck. because you're too busy bitching about stuff etc etc to do work.

ono! xZeaLitYx is right! Imagine what a tragic future the board will have if it no longer attracts hack requesting newbies!

Excellent, a big FUCK YOU style sticky will really attract new members. Two things contribute to the turning away of newbies; one is the rom hacking itself / command line programs that don't come with Windows GUIs, and the second is just general assery. There is a limit before newbie questions become begging and annoyances, but never should the rom hacker take the initiative and post a big xenophobic, short-sighted STAY THE FUCK OUT sign.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
