Well, yeah just about the only thing you can do is search to see if someone else has used it successfully. If not, then you can try. (hey, the iPod uses a proprietary system to store the music database, it didn't stop a million other management programs from appearing)

Bingo. Memory Stick in particular sticks in my mind... when we have SD and Compact Flash... why... WHY did they need to create a new thing?

A Sony?! Proprietary? oh surely you jest!

There's a possibility that there will be a way to get around it, although I don't know off the top of my head. I'd suggest a good google search to see what you can find. Although it depends really if anybody's reverse-engineered Sony's proprietariness to the point of making it work in Linux.
