Sounds like it, but it better not. I think the BIOS is just crappy. Certain settings make everything run incredibly slow, and the only way to fix it is to load the default settings. (There's probably an update, but I'm not too keen on the idea of flashing a BIOS when the power could go out at any given moment...)

I tried 2 different floppy drives, so I don't think there's a problem with them. The settings are right, and that's exactly what happens; Windows just says there's no disk. (I tried b: too, it doesn't exist.)

floppy drive problem--you put a disk in, run windows, double click on a: and it says disk not found? have you tried the floppy drive in another computer? (i'm guessing yes), have you looked at your BIOS settings to make sure it is set to 3.5" floppy disk? do you have your floppy controller enabled? (maybe somehow it was disabled in BIOS)

i dunno, with all these trivial problems, sounds like the motherboard has some type of hardware defect...

Yeah, looks like it takes priority over everything. I even tried changing PATHEXT so .bat files are executed before .exe, and putting a cmd.bat in \windows, but it didn't work.

Hm... I'm getting some major graphics corruption all of a sudden. Also, my system occasionally pauses for a second, then a line flickers on the screen... The same happened when I tried to overclock to 2ghz (which I promptly undid ). Could this indicate an overheated video card? (Case temp 40°C, CPU 45°C, but those have been steady pretty much since I put it together; the old computer read about the same.) Many pixels, particularly title bars, just plain won't redraw. Here's a screenshot, but I dunno if the problem will show up in it. *reboots*

[edit] Rebooting (and enabling AGP Fast Write; dunno why it would have been off) seems to have fixed it for now, but that was only about 1 minute ago. Temperatures are still the same. AGP voltage is apparently 1.55V, which I can adjust if necessary.

[edit again] Bah, can't get standby mode to work either, it just starts up again. I had the same problem before, and fixed it by not allowing any devices to wake it up (the power button would do that job nicely), but of course in SP2, I can't disable that for anything except LAN cards which don't have it enabled.

[more editing] Turns out the graphic corruption is a known driver problem. I updated it so that supposedly shouldn't happen. It didn't fix dual-monitor mode, though (xgiv3.dll crashes), we'll see what their tech support has to say about that one.

...OK, this is annoying. No floppy drives will work anymore. I tried 2 drives, 2 cables and every possible connection, but either the drive won't even spin up or it just says there's no disk inserted. Even the BIOS acts as if there's no disk when trying to boot off it. Depending on my settings I can get it to say 'FDC Failure' at startup and not let me try to boot from disks but that's about it. Windows, of course, doesn't report any problems.

change your global path to look for 'cmd' in another directory (i.e. C:\) before windows/system32. However, in that other directory, you need to make cmd.exe of your own that will run "cmd.exe /k yourautoexec.bat"

nevermind, that doesn't work...it seems cmd is hard coded into run...the closest thing to cmd I can think of is to make a batch file like ccmd or _cmd or something like that...

The only way I know of is to run cmd.exe /k somebatchfile. However I like to just hit Win+R and type 'cmd', which makes that difficult.

if you run command.com, then autoexec.nt will run.
if you run cmd.exe, then autoexec.nt will not run since it is a windows based program. so, maybe there is a flag for cmd that you can use...

Yeah, that's what I did. Autoexec.nt doesn't seem to be doing much, I think it's only used at startup.

I could slipstream SP2 onto my Windows XP CD and then compare. So, you are staying that if you install WinXP with the CD you have, you are installing WinXP that has had SP2 applied?

As for autoexec.bat, check out the %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT

Well, mine is SP2.

Anyone know how to kill that 'Queue-It-Up' thing that WMP adds to the right-click menu? I want there to be as few ways to open WMP as possible. And is there something similar to autoexec.bat, that I can have a batch file execute every time I open cmd.exe?

[edit] Looks like setup leaves a crapload of log files on the HD. Gonna scan them for names of missing files. (I know ding.wav is missing, oh noes.)

Files I have that you don't have
Files you have that I don't have

Something interesting is I don't have that cplexe.exe file on my CD. The CD I compared to is Windows XP SP0 Corporate Edition. It appears the CD you have is modified in some way...

Oh yeah, I only compared the i386 directory...

Now why didn't I think of that? Here.

list of missing files...think you can dump the list of files in your i386 folder (or the folder with all the XP files you have)? i can cross check with my XP CD

I'll try that IME but I don't suppose there's a way to get a list of files that are missing? I forgot to write them down during the install. The USB ports are always enabled, and the LAN drivers were installed from the disc. (Guess it might help to try newer ones, if they exist.)

Also, my first real PC casemod:

Hard to tell but the fan controller is now built right into one of the drive bay covers instead of taped on, and that red thing is a button that toggles those blue lights on the top. (Oughta see the complex circuitry huge lump of electrical tape I used. )

If you are not planning to use Office XP, try this.

Front USB ports, connected to one of the USB headers on the motherboard, don't work. The devices won't power up, and Windows says it doesn't recognize them. The back ports, which are built right into the board, work fine.
Just to make sure, are they enabled in BIOS?

Onboard LAN also doesn't work. Windows doesn't even know it exists. The PCI LAN card I installed works alright, though.
Have you checked the MSI page for LAN drivers?

I just bought this little controller box. I had to cut off the plug and attatch a proper molex connector, though, since it's designed for some special kind of lighting system. Just chop off that little white thing, get a connector from an old power supply, and connect red to yellow and black to black. (I think either black will do; I used the one next to yellow.) It's supposedly a standard wiring system, so they should all be the same, but of course you'll want to test it with spare parts first. Unfortunately, it outputs 12V while most LEDs are 5V, so unless you add some resistors, your options are rather limited. (I wanted those blue lights at the top to blink, so the fans wouldn't stop - especially since they're so bright when I'm trying to sleep - but they're only 5V. But hell, this way I can shut the fans off. )

The case is very nice. The fans are positioned right over the AGP slot. It's even got covers for the CD/DVD drive bays, eight - count 'em - eight HDD bays (though 2 are supposed to be floppy drives), and a handle. Each side can also be removed individually. Only thing I can think of that would be useful is if the window was a door so I didn't have to unscrew it when I wanted to change stuff. (Also, I need a new floppy drive... the old one won't fit in the specially-molded FDD slot - it goes in where those wires are just above it - and the current one won't work. Hence why I keep reciepts. )

Case looks good

the fans blink to music? Just out of interest, how does that work? My brother would be really interested in that, he keeps talking about casemodding his P4...

Yeah, I forgot to disable auto-reboot, so I'll see what the error is later. I wanted a more well-known card, but I didn't have a lot to spend on one either. (Plus it's not like I really need something super-powerful... this runs N64 games, which is about the extent of what I'll be doing in 3D. ) The onboard LAN and USB are enabled; Legacy USB Support was off but that didn't change anything.

Argh... Does this happen to anyone else?

The old computer did the EXACT SAME THING.

[edit] Haha! Got the pics. I think the camera just has a driver problem (it's a cheap camera whose drivers really blow). I can take pics by clicking it in My Computer.

Front view. From top to bottom: Cool headlights/bug eyes, sound control device (those lighted fans back there blink to music ), thermometer, power button.

Side view. The case has a big frickin window. You can't really tell in this picture, but the plastic is designed to look like it's melting.

Side view again, with the fan lights dimmed a bit.

I'm pretty sure the rear USB ports do work. The joystick even works properly in ZSnes again! Yay!

So you have Realtek AC'97 too? And I already have a DVD burner.

What kind of Graphics card is "Chaintech Volari V3 XGI"? I´ve never heard of that.

Couldn´t you have bought a well-known graphics card? And you have almost the same Motherboard as me.

"PSU: 400 watts (old one was 100... no wonder nothing worked! )"

Lucky it didn´t catch fire. My cousin's PSU did that once.

Celeron sucks.

Control panel>Admin tools>services

Then look for security center and turn it off. I have it turned on, as I don't mind having it around and I have a own firewall and anti-virus and I have the auto-update turned on. (thought I made it to prompt whenever it finished downloading, so I can choose whenever I want to install. )

And honestly, you should get a firewall. Just download Zonealarm and install it. It's not fun whenever there is a new security hole, that only causes a new worm to infect your computer...

And turn off "Automatic restart when computer have a fatal error". At least you will see what the error is. You find that in control panel>system and then you choose the advanced tab. Look for something along the lines of "start and restore". You should find the setting for turning automatic restart off whenever a error comes up.

After you done that, try to mess with tv-out again. Chanches are, it will show an error related to the graphic card drivers... (and I really do hope you're using the latest drivers )

I gopt my burner from a small business computer
shop, the price was excellent. Is it possible your PCI LAN card is messing with your onboard one?
