Blood was my first anime that I ever owned So I have a bias towards that, as it is the only anime that my little sister and mother enjoy (they're horror film fanatics).

When I first saw VHD, I wasn't too impressed. The art was pretty groovey looking, but it had choppy animation (no other way to describe it). The story was quite boring. Then Bloodlust came out.

Bloodlust...What a great movie.

I have them both. The original was good for it's time. Not great, but good.

Bloodlust kicked a lot of ass though. Especially on the visuals.

As for Blood? Eh, I'd have to go with the whole "good, not great" thing again.

What's so great about Vampire Hunter D? WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT VAMPIRE HUNTER D?!?

...actually, I'm not really too sure myself. I still liked it though. D is one of the coolest characters I've ever seen in an anime.

Well us UKbies don't have Bloodlust The original is really good. It does look a bit dated now but I really like it. The plot is a bit cliched and you can see the ending from a mile away but it's still enjoyable. I would really like to watch it subbed but Manga are fucktards.

Vampire Hunter D is about 11 years old now. It's not spectacular, but then again it's not that bad. I didn't notice anything about the animation.

Blood: The Last Vampire is newer, and completely digitally animated, so of course it's going to look better. Same for Bloodlust.

Possibly the reason why people like it so much is because it was a special title at the time, because it's based on the popular novels. It's also considered a classic, a must see title.
There is also the attraction that the character design is based upon the art of Amano, which illustrates the novels.
It has also influenced many other titles, and it is a popular opinion that it has influenced Castlevania series.

Personally, I think it's a great film, and while some people may not think much of the twist at the end, I liked it

I saw both the original and Bloodlust around the same time. I hadn't really heard anything about either... I really liked the original, and I didn't really like Bloodlust. I guess I can't explain why. Not very helpful, huh.

You know what, Elmo, I have also wondered the same thing. But people do not praise it as brilliant. I can just see it as an 80's movie w/poor animation, and the main reason why it was good was the action. However, you MUST SEE VHD: Bloodlust. That blows the original away by far. Also, Bloodlust was originally done in English, but it's really well done. The artwork, as in the first one, was done by Yoshitaka Amano, famous for the Final Fantasy cover art stuff.

Ah... I thought that's why people liked it. I prefered "Blood: The Last Vampire" now THAT kicked arse, Vampire Hunter D just comes off like a crappy 80's TV show. Cheaply made, with no plot whatsoever

Because I've watched it and I didn't see why it was so brilliant... it was mediocre at best.....
