a good idea, if you're a n00b.

Well, there has to be some sort of limit. I don't think we can declare it and alpha and omega guide to rom hacking, or a real compendium of sorts, since the very nature of rom hacking makes it loose and dissociated (with a few communities here and there). Rather, a good start would simply be setting up organization by system and games, and then for each game, having a list of categories. Those could include different kinds of hacking and info. For instance:

SUPER NINTENDO

\/

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY

\/

ASM Hacking
Offsets
Utilities
Technical Notes
etc.

~

I'm not too knowledgable with all that, so I'm not sure what categories would go where, but the basic idea is to make a place where simple data can be dumped. The high aim of the Wiki is to simply preserve information. For instance, say an obscure game gets hacked by an enterprising individual. He has a thread on ACMLM's about his big project. However, midway, he loses interest, and the thread goes to the back of the forum. If the info were posted to the Wiki, new users could simply go there instead of having to dig through the forum and general internet.

Of course, the problem is just motivating people to dump their findings there. And in some cases, it won't be as simple as dumping if people are to make heads or tails of what they're looking it. But the model above is my suggestion, anyhow.

I'm in, as long as I don't have to work out the basic structure of the thing. That part requires a bit of planning, which I am not too fond of.

Okay. If we should start a wiki, the first step would be to form the group which creates the Wiki and starts filling it with information. Anybody interested?

I think the Wikicities project could be a hosting solution.

http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/Start_a_new_Wikicity

From what I gather, they allow groups of users to start a Wiki if it's said to have a viable audience and a dedicated group of editors.

alright I made a brilliant idea

if all goes well with this We should start a separete thread for faq question ideas.

Don't forget to sticky the separate thread so it'll be easy for people to find it and post their ideas in. Just a suggestion.

You know, I read the stickies before I ever posted anything. In fact, I re-read the stickies just in case I'd missed anything. So, you know...gimme.

A wiki is a brilliant idea that I'm much too lazy to care about. If someone hosts it and stuff, I'll probly contribute...something. Otherwise, though, I'll just let it sit as a brilliant idea until someone else does something about it. Heh.

Like BGNG suggested, a Wiki committee might work. A group of experienced hackers, willing to share information, starts adding stuff to the Wiki. If there's enough info to begin with, the chances are higher that it gets successful.

The catch is, a team of experienced and unexperienced ROM Hackers need to team up to create this FAQ and/or Wiki. This cannot be a one or two person job. We need experienced ROM Hackers for the answer and unexperienced for questions we may miss. An idea like this would work very well IF people are willing to contribute and participate and discuss what to put in.

I chose yay cause it really sounds like a good idea I'd like to see something like that.

I really like the idea of a rom hacking wiki. If the software is good, people will use it as long as we advertise it enough.

I voted for yay because with a sticky FAQ here, mods have a good reason to trash threads that n00bs make that contains stuff already in that FAQ leaving room for questions not in the FAQ and of course hacks. Just take a look at some hacks on the page. Most of them are buried down at the bottom page or are sent to the next page that nowhere rarely looks over there because of the questions n00bs make.

There was an SMW hacking wiki for a short period of time (hosted by Jesper, IIRC). It was no success, though. Also, the wiki software was terrible.

A rom hacking wiki might be worth a shot if people actually add stuff and if it uses a good wiki software.

The idea of a wiki for ROM hacking has been discussed before. Unfortunately, nothing much ever came of it (well except for a wiki on ZD for emulation that had a ROM hacking bit, but that died out because too few people knew about it).

I wish! But actually, when I was new here, I did read the FAQ's, and after a while, read the stickies. This sounds like a good idea, I guess, if we can pitch some more good questions.

I have to agree with Disch on the matter. BMF54123's Data Repository doesn't get a lot of traffic and is possibly overlooked (that's where I upload all my data).

Heh, I read over the poll question and thought, "I'll stretch what he means by taking it to the farthest extent."

Yes, an FAQ needs to be made for the rom hacking forum. "for" was the word that made me vote yay. (kind of a major stretch there) Maybe a link to it could be put in the announcement for the forum to keep to what Dude Man was asking (how long has it been since one of those have been made anyway).

Well, get together and make a Wiki Committee. Although that should probably have its own thread.

I say no to the idea of a hacking forum FAQ for the reasons already disclosed.

A wiki to act as a rom hacking data repository would be MAGNIFICENT. Kind of like what BMF tried to do on the Rusted Magick forums -- but in wiki form.

Something which contains game info found by anyone and everyone. I vote yay for that -- although it doesn't have anything to do with this board directly.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
