Hmmm. This is a wild guess but I think it may be possible to use a hex editor to rip and reinsert textures. Problem is, the only l33t thing I know is basic C++. I don't know what sort of complicated math formulas I should use to find these textures.

I also have a question, are there any debuggers for use with PSX emulators? This way I can get a clue as to where in the hex code a certain mesh or texture is.

I know a GameShark for a regular PSX is a debugger, too, but my PSX console is old and freezes A LOT.

Also, what would be a sign that tells me where a texture begins and ends in the hex code?

As for text hacking, you can use the tools posted on "Useful tools for hacking ROMs.". But for that you must open files individually, because Thingy32 doesn't support huge files. More than that, if you could edit some text, you must be sure to make the iso the same as it was created. You must use the following tools:
- CDGEN (to create a ccs file by dragging the files on it)
- CCS2CTI (converts from ccs to cti)
- BUILDCD (make a buildcd mage from a cti)
- STRIPISO (makes an iso MODE 2/xa from a buildcd image)

Also, you need Isobuster. In isobuster, there'll be info about the LBA's of the files, so you must make the necessary changes in cdgen according to IsoBuster.

PS: Try starting with Spyro 2, it's an easy text "hackable" iso, because it stores the text as ASCII standard (except some special chars), so you can use a standard hex editor (try using xvi32)

I just opened the first Valkyrie Profile BIN file, meh, the swap file was filled with more than 800 MB and all my RAM was used up too - after few minutes of opening the file

Except the Sony credit entries also I can'T seem to find text in the hex editor (I used Winhex), a text search with several attempts didn't bring up anything

I guess even for translation it might be too much - what if a translation might be done:

Will the proper PPF patch be 100 or even more megs in size ?

There are a lot of Sonic hackers, but that's it really.

sb iq: If you don't know how to do something you can always get the notoriety of being the first to do it.

Rom hacking is fun, but it is also hard work, and if you're not willing to learn what you need to learn you might as well find another hobby. Sometimes that requires you to just go out on a limb and start modifying stuff in the game and seeing what you come up with.

Does anyone know what sort of processor the thing uses and where the code is stored? That would be a crucial step in figuring out how to hack your PSX games to the fullest extent. Based on the relative crappiness of PSX emulation I would guess that it is a complicated machine. (i'm not dissing it, but compared to earlier system emulation it seems to be much more lacking in compatibility).

BTW I have seen next to no PSX hacking scene here. GBA, NES, SNES, and Game Boy seem to predominate. N64 seems to be catching on slightly with some work on Mario 64. If there's a lot of Genesis / Sega hackers, they seem to hang out elsewhere.

You can extract ISOs into individual files ya know. I tried to get anything out of Super Mario's Wacky Worlds that way. No luck, a bunch of files I can't recognize.

Yeah, but not just translating. Graphics and texture editting in 3D games, too.

The best PSF evar is from tales of eternia. Gnome village. Most inspirational song ever. I've done some of my best spritework listening to it.

PSF ripping/editing also is always interesting. (shameless plug/request: I wish I had psf's from Dragon Quest 4&5 remakes, Chrono Trigger/FF6 remakes, etc!!)

oh, it's been done. Translating is hacking too you know.

Well, it would be hard to hack the ISO. I mean, looking for something specific in one huge file. I'd just leave the game in it's original format and copy the files I need to hack (or attempt to) to my HD then make a CDRW of the game I'm hacking and transfer the modified files to the CDRW.

So, I guess it's still ROM hacking.

I would stop being a script kiddie and do it manually, but I can't seem to find any beginner's text guides on how to rip and reinsert textures in a PSX game.

I really hope the PSX hacking scene advances.

Would it be called ROM hacking or ISO hacking?

How advance is the PSX hacking scene? I'm fairly new to it.

No, I don't mean hacking as in mods and cheat codes, I mean actual ROM hacking.

To me it doesn't seem too advance since only the TIM texture format seems to be cracked, meaning I can only edit the textures on games using the TIM format and nothing else. I'd try ripping and reinserting the images manually, but the most l33t thing I've done is pass first semester C++ at a university with a B-, so I don't even know where to begin.

So does it look like the PSX hacking scene will advance sometime in the future?
