wite: Lunar originally came out in Japan in 1992. FFVI was 1994, so Lunar predated it by two years. (The American release was only in '93 but still.)

Glad someone has some good sense. IGN are basically the sell-outs of gaming journalism; They suck everyone's and everything's dick in order to get more readers.

Since we're going for "best," not "most influental," I'm gonna have to say FFIV, the US release, should be a bit lower than FFVI. The bulk of both games is really the story; Neither require a lot of strategy or intelligence, especially compared to "true" strategy games. A LOT of the characters in FFIV were two-dimensional and pretty generic. I don't think I should have to explain how stereotypical guys like Cecil, Rosa, and Kain were. The last boss had a pretty bland personality, too.

I'm not sure if the original Japanese script was any better. I'm sure some things got changed due to Nintendo's harsh censoring policies.

Good point about Y's, though.

Some random madden game beat SoM.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people are bashing Madden just because they don't like sports games and because of EA's policy. Madden is a damn good series, and Madden 2004 (Not a "random" Madden game) is a very well-made game. There's layers of strategy to it; I'm decent at it, but a lot of my friends will beat my ass senseless in it.

Perhaps it does, but what about Smash Bros Melee placing as poorly as it did? Final Fantasy games beat it. That should never be =/

It's a fun game, but it's far too random to really have the depths a "true" fighter would have. I honestly think of it more like a party game than an actual fighter.

I also didn't like how Starcraft was so insanely high on that list. I mean yeah, it's a great game, but a masterpiece?

Starcraft is nearly perfectly balanced, and is one of the only RTS games to achieve the level of balance it has without having both sides be symmetrical. Maybe it is a little bit high, but I'd place it in the top 20, easily. PS: everyone stop playing "$$$FASTEST BGH MONEY MAP EVER$$$," it ruins the game.

It's still the best RPG ever created, period. Think for a moment of all other RPGs created untill 1994 and compare them to all those great things that were implemented in Final Fantasy VI...can you name one RPG that had all that and even more than that at the time?

Ultima 7: The Black Gate had a damn involving world, and that was released in 1992. Still, I think they're too different to draw comparisons. When I think of U7's progeny, I think of the Baldur's Gate series and the Elder Scrolls series.

I think the original Lunar came out around FFVI's time; that draws some pretty good competition.

Responses to the actual top 100 list:

-I'm very glad to see Ultima: Underworld and Ultima 7: The Black Gate on the list. Richard Garriott rarely gets the respect he deserves. I'll admit the series has aged some... But I think those two are just as playable today as they were 13 years ago. Assuming you can get them to run on your computer that is; Those who are interested might want to look into DosBox.

-Thief 2 and Gunstar Heroes are very good picks. I thought Thief 2 might need to be a little higher, but not by much.

-Syndacate. YES. Glad to see it.

-I always think of Fallout 2 as the better one.

-Why do they always pair original games and thier sequels close to each other? I get the feeling that's more from laziness or a desire to avoid controversy than actual rating.

-Super Mario Bros. 3 at #23 is pretty shitty. True, it has flaws, but the flaws it has are forgiveable. Maybe not the best game ever, or even the best platformer ever, but it deserves higher, especially compared to SMB1.

-Half-Life's single player was good, but only it's mods have real memorable multiplayer. And before someone goes "COUNTAR STIEK SUX LOL," Natural Selection was and is my favorite mod.

-DEUS EX. This game often gets under-rated because it was more of a sleeper hit. God, this game was good. Glad to see it.

-Ocarina of Time was good, but second best game ever is streching it. I often feel the game was a bit over-rated; I didn't feel it did much that Super Mario 64 didn't do before it, and I thought the story wasn't that interesting. Not that Zelda storylines have ever been very deep, but at least in the first three games it largely took a backseat to the action. The whole "every girl falls in love with the hero" bit is cliche, as well.

-Super Mario Bros. 1 as the best game of all time is either just fanservice or nostaliga. It's good, but it's also aged. Maybe it wins for "Most Influential Game," but that's not what this list is about, now is it?

-Grand Theft Auto 3 instead of VC or SA doesn't seem right.

-I saw Halo, but I don't remember seeing Halo 2. Halo's multiplayer was basically just pistols, sniper rifles, and rocket launchers; Halo 2 brings a lot of variety.

-World of Warcraft might have been a good pick. A MMORPG that's FUN is quite amazing.

-I don't remember seeing ANY Megaman games. What the fuck? MM2, MM3, MMX, MMX4, and MM Legends are all games that come to mind as all-time greats. 2 and 3 especially, as they double for nostalgia value.

I'm guessing SMB's influence played a role although if they were going for best game both influence AND gameplay wise and it had to be a Nintendo game... yeah. SMB3 for sure.

Culturally, FF7 should be higher but you can make a case for a lot of RPG's/games being better than it. It's a really sticky topic but I think it should be on any top 100 list. Where it's put depends on what the list's aim is.

And I think IGN might have an anti-Sega bias... I remember GameSpot has an anti-Nintendo bias sometimes, I remember the Super Smash Bros. Melee review (despite getting a high 8) sounding more like a mid-7 game.

Yeah, at first I was trying to see if maybe influence in the videogame market played a part in the rankings...but then that doesn't explain how FFVII (Which, for better or worse, put console RPGs into the mainstream) was so low on the list.

ALrighty, here is my Critique of the list...

The original Super Mario Brothers on top? Are you KIDDING me? SMB 3 is better, hell SMW is even beter than that.

FF7 is number 88 in the list about 80 places lower than it should be. The cultural impact of this game just can't be denied. FF 10 over FF7, are they bloody INSANE?!

Ico's in the top 20, finally, this masterpiece is getting some recognition.

No Dizzy games. Travesty.

All American Boxart is pretty crap and gaudy. I pity you poor US consumers

Sonic 1 is at number 63, Sonic 2 or Sonic CD are hardly mentioned.

Actually, where is Outrun? Super Monkey Ball? Or Nights?

No Shenmue. A Crime.

It seems there's no accounting for taste as far as IGN go. Ah well.

*pulls out one of the few old NP's he has left*

Issue 50. July 1993. I'm just going to do the top 10 for each system and the number of points (formula using Player, Dealer and Pro data) each game got. They used this format for a while I think, at first it was just the top 30 NES games.

On another note, I would really LOVE to find some scanned NP issues.

SNES:

1) Star Fox (29,401)
2) Street Fighter II (19,255)
3) Zelda: Link to the Past (17,149)
4) Super Mario Kart (12,086)
5) Final Fantasy II (6,337)
6) Mario Paint (6,302)
7) NCAA Basketball (5,759)
8) Super Star Wars (5,534)
9) Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose (4,645)
10) TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (4,561)

GB:

1) Super Mario Land 2 (29,108)
2) Super Mario Land (13,295)
3) Metroid II: Return of Samus (12,831)
4) Kirby's Dreamland (10,380)
5) Tetris (7,730)
6) Zelda: Link's Awakening (7,254)
7) Dr. Mario (6,951)
8) Battletoads (6,435)
9) Faceball 2000 (6,413)
10) Final Fantasy Adventure (5,301)

NES:

1) Super Mario Bros. 3 (14,347)
2) Legend of Zelda (11,833)
3) Mega Man V (9,592)
4) Tecmo Super Bowl (8,316)
5) Metroid (7,463)
6) Dragon Warrior IV (6,133)
7) Final Fantasy (6,018)
8) Dr. Mario (5,530)
9) Battletoads (5,365)
10) Tetris (5,097)

Right now, I am hoping that's a fake. The origanel SMB? SMAS ranked even lower than SMB............That list isn't national is it?

Nah, a top 50/100 for a specific system's easier. I've actually been looking at making a NES one... you can easily cut the whole list down to 200-250 when you take out all the crap games.

"# 088 // Final Fantasy VII"

I can't believe FF7 got 88th...on every other Top 100 Games list, FF7 gets on the top 10 for sure!

Isn't a top 100 for each system a lot? Maybe like a top 10 or top 20 for each system would be a better idea.

Gamespy's doing something like that right now, because they're having top 25 lists for the current-gen systems. And in some magazines that I used to subscribe to (Read: Nintendo Power pre-Pokemon), there used to be a poll among readers for the top 10-15 games for the systems.

And I'm sure that we could come up with our own list(s) if we disagree so much...

Wtf? SM64 is WAY better than SMB, IMHO. I wish we had broadband so the lists could load faster.

I think it's a lot easier to make a top 100 for each system than a top 100 overall... but even THEN if I ever did one, I'd probably have them in no particular order. So hard to choose and justify why you put one game at #54 instead of #55.

Here's a good example on why Kyouji Craw says about SMB3.

http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=16768&page=0

If you want to just check his posts from his profile look at post 6994 for a good reason why Kyouji Craw doesn't like SMB3.

Really, it was generally that what it was matched up against was a far worse game, and after my most favored games were eliminated close to the start... Yeah, it was the one I was rooting for. (Meanwhile, I just don't understand Mario 3 beating it. Actually, I've written up this rant before and don't feel like doing it again. Check, like, older posts of mine probably in the Mario forum for my thoughts on Mario 3.)

And I never said I particularly liked Smash Bros Melee. Really, I don't. I much prefer the original to primarily broken game that is melee. I just think it should have placed better than any RPG. And even if I did like Melee, and even if your comments weren't insipid, that can't make me a Nintendo fanboy, because gasp... It wasn't developed by Nintendo. HAL Laboratory did it, it was only published by Nintendo.

... ?

You made it sound like you worshipped SSBM in the Best Game Voting threads, in the past.

Speaking of Gaurdian Legend, that made me go back and check over this list and reminded me of 3 things:

1. Where is Blaster Master?
2. I still need to play / get System Shock 2.
3. IGN's advertisements suck ass.

Yes, but at the same time you shouldn't provide material for him to keep the flames burning. So I'd suggest that both of you agree to disagree and keep the topic on track. OK?
