That's shifting left and right, which is easy (use the scanline interrupt). YI shifts up and down which is less easy (needs some HDMA).

In SMAS, the BGs in the water levels of any game use the scanline effect too, but obviously they don't affect how Mario moves.

Hm, I forgot about that. I guess if you shifted the layer up and down like a sine wave every scanline, you could make such an effect. Though good luck getting Mario to move with it, though... you'd just have graphic distortion; the physical layout wouldn't change.

IIRC, BMF's switch palace only had the shimmering look.

The ground did NOT tilt and shift like in yoshi's island.

I did have an april fools day joke and although the power up stuff was part of it i did announce sometime afterwards that i was working on a power up thing...
i honestly have been too busy to work on it for a while now...last i was on it i had a bug and couldnt see the correct colors for some reason. The first thing i was going to do was release something that allows you to have seperate palettes for every power ups and eventually work my way to power ups.

i've been busy with everything else and have been programming for the PSP that I got back in June (i should have a snakes type game finished within the next few weeks)

this post has renewed my interest so that means ill probably start working on it again now

I'm pretty sure it can't. Unless you know how to program a SuperFX and the game's level layout is really similar to YI's.

That would be awesome (and very annoying), but what would make it even better is having the "dizzy effect" from YI. I don't think that SMW can support that tho.

If it's cool to add a suggetion how about the classic poison mushroom?
Maybe a reverse mushroom.
If you eat it, the controls are reversed. Left is right, up is down, B is A, and vise-versa.
It would last throughout the level.

How much ASM do you know? I doubt it's enough to create a new power up. The only person I know of who has done that (not including racoon mario) is FuSoYa.

I would probably only create 3 power ups:

Fire Melon: When on yoshi, he can eat it and breath fire. Exactly like Yoshi's Island.

Ice Melon: When on yoshi, he can eat it and breath ice. Exactly like Yoshi's Island.

Watermelon: When on yoshi, he can eat it and spit seeds. Exactly like Yoshi's Island.

Those would rock so hard!

You can't add powerups yet. A guy here called Habsolute Fate is making a program which will allow you to add new powerups, and seperate Mario and Luigi's GFX. Just wait for him. If you know ASM you could modify the cape and fire flower into one of those power ups. But you probably don't. wait for Hab.

Ice tulip(possibly find a way to freeze a sprite's movement values kinda like PAR freezes the values to peoples health and apply said hack here here. Cause the sprite to die on impact while in frozen state. make frozen character palettes to be added.alter fire flower palette.)

Samurai Suit (alter cape hitbox, create new palette. alter mario's speed physics)

Gekko Suit (some how freeze mario when touching walls while you holding y. likewise change his palette (add wall clinging palettes) and mario's physics engine.)
