I thought about giving Mario a sword once. You could make it act like the enemy had been shot. Or if possible, disable jumping on most enemies, and make the sword override that and act as if you jumped on it. That would be a little more realistic, and still allow you to have fireballs. |

No, it'll work on SNES. Cpubasic, you wouldn't need to hack in the sword, just slightly edit the cape-spin. After all, the ape already interacts with the sprites, and for the ones it doesn't interact with, you can fix that with MWR.
Now all you'd need to do is:
Make the feather only spin on one side Change the GFX into Cloud's Change the sound effect Disable powerup loss, either add the health system or get an instant kill.
The boss battle would be difficult, but with a little work, it could be done. |

The level of the project is probably unhandlable for the SNES. It'll probably work on new ones like GBA, though.
My ASM level is only able to make an SMW block that puts a game crasher item in the item box. |

Possible, yes. Able to be done now, no.
The information you will need to even do this:
Mario's Tile Data Y-Button Pressing... thingy... (forget the actual name...) Collision ALL sprite editing to allow sword to hit Health system to not lose the sword
That was a lot to say, but a whole lot of work would be required to even implement this. That is what I would think needed to make it work all well. Plus, the boss fights would have to be reworked, as in a hack-n-slash game, boss fights need to be all action packed or fast paced, not jump-on-me-and-hurt-me bosses. Lots and lots of editing is going to be required to even get this started.
Believe me, I have had an idea similar to this for a while now. |

Obviously someone has thought of it considering you meantioned it, but no one has done it. It would require so much ASM I doubt anyone would even beable to attempt it. Also, I think most sprite editing (like KT and Mikeyk's sprite editing) is ASM.
And if you wanted a side scroller that did that, I wouldn't base it off mario, but off FF7 instead.
Short answer: no. |

Has anyone ever thought about combining ASM with sprite editing to create a sort of side scrolling Final Fantasy 7 game, in which Cloud hacks up enemies with his sword? Just wondering.... |
