A short history:

At first it was a book, called "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." The book had roughly the same events as the movie, but the details were very very different. Ever notice how the Oompa Loompas all look the same, and all have Orangey-Reddish skin? RED skins? Even worse, in the original book they were black-skinned and worked for food. Racism and slavery were themes in the book.

The original movie was changed to be less offending to a mainstream audience, basically making it into a kid's story. It still has some weird scenes ("There's no sign of slowing so the danger must be growing!" or something to that effect), but not as bad.

A book was then written based on the movie's script. If you bought "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," you got the heavily revised edition. Thomas is wrong, the "Willy Wonka" book is very different from the "Charlie" book.

The new movie is supposedly based a very dark interpretation of the original "Charlie" book. I don't know if the "Charlie" version of the book is back in stores because of the movie's release, but it's a possibility. I haven't looked. I haven't seen the new movie either, so I don't know if it fits the old book or not.

Yeah, I'm lurking, It's the day after Ozzfest, so the range of what I am physically able to do ranges from "sit down" to "lie down."

Maybe a book you're reading was written on the movie that was an adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" ??

You are reading "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory"...the movie is called "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". And if you are reading something by the movie title then it may be the novelization of the movie which would be stupid considering the movie was basically based off of the book.

Wait.... there was no "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" book?

I think they named the new movie after the book because they wanted it to be more like the book, or at least that is what Johnny Depp said in an interview I saw him in. Also if this one is more like the book and is a big sucess then maybe they will make a movie of the sequel: "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator"

The book released was called charlie and the chocolate factory, the film was released as Willy wonka and the chocolate factory, because the film focused more on willy wonka and his chocolate factory than it did charlie.

They didnt remake the movie, they did an adaptation of the book , so they used the name charlie and the chocolate factory.

the wonka bar obviously didnt fail, because they still make them today.
there were multiple books about charlie, most of them about the chocolate factory. the other book is charlie and the glass elevator or something like that.
both of those books were written by the same person.

Thanks for clearing that up and obviously I never heard of the book before.

ok, maybe i'm dellusional, but I thought it is supposed to be that way. I heard Wanka was a book and charlie was another book, similar to eachother but by a different author, could be wrong.

Yeah. Canada and Britain got philosopher's stone. America got sorcerer's stone. It was done because A: the Scholastic company thought that it was easier for American's to spell. It was B: more open and less esoteric a reference. And a bunch of other shit.

And if any movie needs a remake that's closer to the book, it's Space Oddesy 2001. The book was awesome, the movie just plain made no sense.

Actually, I thought the remake had both titles, one was the "beta", if you will, and then they finally went with an official title.

Its like when a game is set to be released, and they don't have an official box art for it, so they make something up, just to tie you over until the real box art comes out.

What's really strange is that each movie focuses on the opposite character ("Willy Wonka" on Charlie, and "Charlie" on Wonka)...though I haven't seen the new one, I'm just going by a review I read.

The old movie had a different name than the book, because they actually released a 'wonka' candy bar, and they paid to have the movie promote it.. (the bar failed pretty badly...)

The new movie is apparently a lot closer to the book than the old movie.

The old one is called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and the newer version is called Charlie an the Chocolate Factory. In the US, it's Charlie an the Chocolate Factory: The IMAX Experience.
So uh, I guess they just wanted to be a little different.

Way to distinguish the two?

I dunno.

Ok reason why I'm confused is that I have no idea why they have two different titles for the same movie. I'm talking about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory and Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I seriously don't get it.
