Please keep in mind that there are two different programs called WINHEX. One is a great commercial program with which you can do almost everything except using tables. The other is a freeware program with table support and many other neat features. I've always used it for my translation works. The freeware Winhex can be downloaded straight from my website. (under programs). |

Back in the old days Hexpose used to be my all-time-favourite for doing any hex editing. Nowdays I pretty much use WinHex or write my own tools for editing roms. XP's compatibility modes wont unfortunately provide any improvement for running DOS programs at all, there's no option to emulate different dos versions and Win95/98 emulation simply fakes the OS version number to applications.
Learning to use structure viewers is really valuable help, you can define the in-rom structures and view hex the data in game, in easily identifiable format. WinHex and I think latest version of Hex Workshop has this feature too. |

No. After finding the solution a year ago, I see why everyone gets pissed at people that ask the question. Its so stupid. And, its right on one of the first Google searches if you type "WinXP DOS Close". MOST, IF NOT ALL DOS PROGRAMS WORK ON WINXP! But! WinXp opens and closes the DOS prompt if you open via the executable, so therefore heres a simple solution for you low lifes.
Step 1.For quick and easy opening, place the DOS file on the desktop.
2. Start Button>Run>Type CMD>Hit Enter>Open DOS Prompt
3. Type CD Desktop, hit enter.
4. Input the filename (Example: Hex.exe) Hit enter.
5. Use your program for whatever purpose.
This is the way in WinXP to use some if not alot of DOS programs that XP thinks are One Use EXEs, where they open and close. Also, look around the web, and you guys might find this patch one of my older friends at A+ (Yes im in a Career Tech, along with Cisco as one of my courses) found that altered standard settings in XP and made it possible to use such DOS programs from their standard EXE.

Some older programs just wont work with XP... you might be able to get it working using compatiblity (make a shortcut on the desktop, open its properties dialogue and go to the compatibility tab). Ive gotten some programs to work like that. Its not perfect though.
As for a good Hex editor, Hex Workshop is by far my favourite. I was really pissed when my trial ran out and i had to go back to using a much older version. Even the old version is good though. I really need to get around to cracking/buying my new version (depending on my lazyness). |

Hex Workshop indeed.
As for your windows XP problem, try oppening Hexposure in a command prompt. Search our windows folder for cmd.exe for more. |

Translhextion and/or Hex Workshop. Workshop is far better but lacks table support and isn't free.
Hexecute is also good for quick edits, but it leaks memory like a swiss cheese fish tank.  |

I would like to know which Hex Editor are good since I can't use Hexposure because it runs in DOS and I have Windows XP. Does anyone have good choices of hex editor I can use?
