Get her to install Linux, then. 
The hard drives won't all slow down. You know how there are two different cables (two channels) each with two connectors on them; the two on each cable will run at the speed of the slower one, not affecting the other cable. (Hence why you generally put your fastest HDs on one, and a slow one and a CD-ROM on the other, or if you only have two put them on separate cables.) |

it is probably because the HDs are too slow when handling virtual memory. Having more RAM is supposed to help the computer but can hinder the computer if the HDs are not up to the task of doing the swapping. So, that may be the case... |

Oh, I did make a huge typo. I meant to say MB thru that entire first post, not KB .
This PC has 128MB of RAM. We have tried it with 256MB, and it is damn slow. It doesn't even run at 512MB . If the HD's run at the speed of the slowest, then that is no good. I think we will have to stick with the 2 we have now. Or I could try and convince my mom to make the 2 largest ones replace the two smaller ones we have now. She doesn't want Windows XP thats all (the 2 largest HD's have XP) beause of "privacy issues" . She is paranoid when it comes to that stuff ...
I will get her to read this topic tommorrow morning and see what she has to say. I just want to play my frickin Sims games! |

I think Win98 has problems with having 512MB or more RAM. The hard drives shouldn't be a big issue (if your power supply can handle it) but keep in mind that each IDE channel runs at the speed of the slowest drive. I'd put the 2 fastest ones on one channel, the bigger of the other 2 on the other channel and a CD-ROM instead of the last one. |

Either you have a typo, or your math is off. 1024KB = 1MB, not 1 GB. Meaning, if the RAM sticks are 256KB, you won't be getting 1 GB of RAM. You'll be getting 1/1024th of a GB of RAM. If they are 256MB, then I don't know why your computer refuses to load with them in.
Also, is the 128 RAM in your computer now 128MB or 128KB? |

My mom just got 2 more hardrives from one of her friends. She currently has 2 of them in her PC right now. They aren't very big or anything; here are the GB:
I. 3.7 GB
II. 8.4 GB
III. 6.6 GB
IV. 7.8 GB
That is a total of 26.5 GB. My question is:
She has 2 HD's in right now; 3.7, and 7.8. The computer runs fine. She also has 6 extra 256MB RAM sticks, and one 128MB RAM in this PC right now. She wanted to put two of the 256 RAM sticks in, so she did. The computer refused to load. She took one out, the computer loaded, but was INCREDIBLY slow. She put back in the 128MB stick, and it was fast. Why ? We are running windows 98 if that makes a difference.
Also, she wants to put the other 2 hard drives in. She has room and everything needed for them to work, but is worried about speed. This PC slowed down abit when the second HD was put in. She thinks that with 4 of them it will be really slow. So...will it?
In short: We want more RAM. We have enough to have like 1GB of ram (Four 256MB sticks for the 4 slots she has in the tower) but is Win98 capable of having that much? And we want more HD's. Is Win98 capable of this task with only 128 RAM?
