Div-X is easily one of the most loved compression formats, but easily the most clever is ATRAC. Check it out.

Good quality and small file size. Yeah, a real fucking disgrace to the internet man.

And I'm also happy that EU said no to software patents. Doesn't help anyone but the people who already have loads of money and want more. There are countless of examples of big companies getting patents for stuff that have been around for ages, and that they I no way invented.

That's fine, it works here too. But also gives me another something to bring up in the staff forum, in which I'll do so now.

This move was a request by another staffer.

Don't hold me responsible.

here is the line at wiki:

DivX ;-) 3.11 Alpha and earlier versions generally refer to a hacked version of the Microsoft MPEG-4 Version 2 video codec, extracted around 1999 by French hacker Jerome Rota (also known as Gej).

so, Microsoft MPEG-4 Version 2 wasn't a precursor to WMV?

anyways, patents is out of the question but not all licenses are free... so, just as long as stuff isn't monopolized things are still good, correct?

Nope, DivX is original. And XviD is a free deritive branched off of when DivX was free.

Besides, WMV quality is reasonable, but it's proprietary so that sucks. Much unlike WMA, where it sucks all-round.

*boots to Hardware/Software*

The description of the forum is misleading. It's not just for help, it's for all thing software and hardware related.

if you are an independent programmer trying to make money or running a company, you had a lot riding on this. otherwise, it doesn't apply to a majority of programmers out there.

i'm not sure what to think of this ruling, since I'll probably won't be dealing with such issues. However, if this were to pass...wouldn't this apply to any patent filed after this point? otherwise, if you can sue "back in time" that is like being convicted before you've even done the crime...

OGG still whoops MP3's ass. Whenever i'm able to, I download the OGG version of music and it's the format I choose whenever I rip something. It's also the format I use for programs, just to avoid license fees.

And I was the only one in class who understand the outcome of software patents and knew the effects of them. Sad how few people know/care about them.

Even if FreeDOS is joking, he does show us a point. God knows which patents this board would break in EU if software patents become an reality...

(not saying that this board would be in trouble, EU laws don't apply to US )

OGG will not replace MP3 for a VERY long time. It doesn't offer anything new over MP3 from the public's point of view, and MP3 is the only format supported by almost every portable digital music player. None of the mainstream products in the UK support OGG in hardware, this makes it an extremely difficult task to make any inroads to the market.

In order to fully guard against ANY legal encumberences, the Xiph.org Foundation is developing the Ogg Vorbis and Theora media formats, which are industry-competible specifications for audio and video compression, respectively. It won't be too much longer before we can say bye-bye to Windows Media, REALMedia and MPEG.

Thank god. Europe would've become a computing wasteland had Software Patents passed a vote. There was absolutely no gain to be made other than a few greedy people with expensive lawyers.

I read this on Slashdot.

I'm very glad about that, as I plan to devolop software in the future. I just don't want to pay licensing fees to severeal companies, becuse someone patented the wheel.
