I heard that [!] only means tested and works, which could still be a not-so-good dump.
Is there an official list for all those tags?

It's supposed to mean a verified good dump, though it doesn't always.

What's [!] suppose to mean anyway?

Make sure it's a 40.0kb ROM and not 40.1kb ROM. Also make sure the ROM has the title screen at the start. I used the actual correct dump, which is usually labelled Super Mario Bros [JU] [!].nes

Interestingly, the game already stores the bricks after they have been hit seperately from the bricks before they have hit. ROM address A49h contains the info for the bricks AFTER they have been hit. So I just used some of the tiles I had freed up earlier to make those dented looking bricks and hexed them in.

One nice thing about SMB1 is that (almost) everything is stored as a 4 tile by 4 tile block, even if the game itself only uses one or two tiles to render it. So you can actually improve the graphics by just wiping out all those tiles used for the title screen and then changing some of the graphics to use 4 different tiles with a hex editor.

For example, you'll notice that the bridge that Bowser is always on uses two tiles, which are at hex addresses $77 and $79. If you go to C98h in the ROM, you'll see (in hex) 77 79 77 79. Simply change this to 77 79 X Y, where X and Y are the addresses for the extra tiles you want to use, and now you can make a 4 tile graphic for the bridge.

Like I said before, this hack looks awesome. One of the few NES hacks that I will download. I can't wait to try this out!

Those graphics look really great! Are you sure this is the NES-version and not mario allstars, you modified there?!

Just kidding! Really one of the best looking Mario-bros hacks I have seen up to now!! Great work!

Yes, all levels and graphics and everything are done! The hack is complete!

I want to give a tremendous thanks to DarhkDiaz who helped me squash a couple of bugs and change a couple of things that I really wanted to have done before I released a full version.
