RY: You might want to start messing around first before you start any major hack. I used the original game and made a few lame changes such as a CERTAIN SM hacks out there, keeping it simple, but making enough changes in a single room.

After practice I dared to add doors, change room demensions andedit pointers to make new scroll plm's and enmies.... I say mess around ebcause you'll learn how things work... How you need to have a room property unknown, to refresh certain grabled graphics when linking improper rooms, ex: Having the door to varia in kraids room, lead anywhere else.

you can see what kind of stuff is able to be done with smile on my topic on the main rom hacking page.

On another note, get used to having a hex editor open continuously while editing, a hex editor is the most useful tool in hacking.

Good luck, and if you're gonna make a hack, make sure you change everything =)

That, I can't answer. I haven't messed with SMILE enough to understand it on that deep of a level yet. I do know some others know though. *cough*

NEONSwift: So far I have edited 1 level (Well... deleted everything in it apart from the doors)

Lenophis: I know how much more you can do with hex but what I don't understand is how do people find this addresses to certain things? And how long does that process take? And I know rom hacking takes patience, especially when I was a true nub at SMW editing.

This is annoying, for a better missing word!
How so? Completly out of romhacking scene OR do you believe in... "magic"? Please, magic wand for ANOTHER Super Metroid editor, now... 3... 2... 1... *b00m*

Super Mario World (Although I can't find it on my comp)
Super Mario Bros. (A simple level hack that I lost interest in)
And I tried to edit Zombies Ate My Neighboors but I didn't understand that editor either

As for RYjet911: you might want to pick up on using a hex editor for some of the hacking you want to do. You don't have to, but you can change a LOT more by hex editing than any game-specific editor would do. Yeah, even Lunar Magic doesn't do it all, despite having that "do my hack for me" button.

So hows the metroid editing going now RYjet? Any progress to speak of in those 4 hours 35 minutes?

I'm a little concerned that it took you an hour and you still didnt get things working but at least you now got some good advice from people here. SMILE is an excellent editor so you should stick with it and i hope to see some progress from you.

2 SECONDS!?! I SPENT OVER AN HOUR CLICKING VARIOUS THINGS!!!

Anyway I need something to do for a while so a Super Metroid hack will probably be the thing I do.

But you'd think it'd be worth it to fiddle around for more than 2 seconds to try to get the thing to work instead of immediately dismissing it as mostly nonworking, despite its high recommendations? We're here to help, but you have to try to figure things out, too.

Anyway, good luck on your hack. I'm anxious to see some complete Super Metroid hacks.

But how do I start editing the game though? When I load the ROM I cannot do anything apart from the two features available in the "Edit" button at the top

This is the last bit of help I can give on the subject, a little more searching brought me to this.

Then you need to devote more time to it. Did you think romhacking would be walk-in-the-park easy?
