I like how Bowser looks too, it's awsome.

Got any pointers to these hacks? Can't find them on zophar.net

I started making a SMB3 hack with SMB1 graphics in it years ago... also changed levels around to make them more SMB1-like.

But then everyone told me it was a stupid idea, they didn't see the point of downgrading the graphics of a game. I do, anything "classic" is way cooler!

My suggestion to you would be to make a map only hack of SMB1 after this one. Then use both your graphics hack and maps hack to make a bigger/better hack!

A guy tried to do this years ago, under the name of Retro Mario Bros. 3. And I plan to remake SMB1 using SMB3 editors. But keep with your project. More is better!

I've always wanted to do a reverse GFX hack, as in putting SMB1 graphics in SMB3, that would be interesting

I'm not a fan of graphics only hacks, but this looks good.

Good suggestions. Other than the bushes and clouds it kind of falls outside the scope of my "graphics only" intent, but then again the purpose of this hack was to use as a starter for more hacks.

I doesn't fall out of the scope of the "graphics only" intent so much as it falls out of the scope of the "I've never touched a hex editor" intent.

Bowser was one of my few "original" creations here. By "original" I mean I took Bowser from Super Mario 3 and moved him around a little to fit in the allotted sprites.

Good suggestions. Other than the bushes and clouds it kind of falls outside the scope of my "graphics only" intent, but then again the purpose of this hack was to use as a starter for more hacks.

Great data thread link, thanks!

I'm with Macbee, that Bowser sprite is pretty good I like it too. Well, if you plan on making changes to your'e hack, I have a data thread I put together from other ROM hackers for SMB1, take a look at it when you get a chance.

Some suggestions:

* Update the cloud and bush graphics. Right now they look the same as SMB1, so it's not actually a complete graphics change.

* Change the palette on the bloopers so that the orange is black instead. This will make them look much nicer.

* Change the palette on the mushrooms so that the orange is black instead. This will also make these look nicer.

* Get rid of the shading on the question blocks. It flashes along with the ? in the block so it looks strange.

* Get rid of the original title screen entirely. This will free up a lot of empty tiles that you can use for in-game stuff, such as:

* Hex edit the pipe graphics so that you don't have that blank green square in there anymore. It looks bad that way.

* Even though the ROM uses the same graphics for the light green bush and the clouds, they are stored in seperate places in the ROM. So you can hex in some of those empty tiles to make the bush actually look different than the clouds!

Looking good, huh?
Is Bowser ripped from other hack or you made him? I think it's the best Bowser for SMB1 I ever seen!

A particular tile for grounds would require ASM hacking. Since he said "updated graphics only", then it's okay, an awesome work.

Most of the graphics look nice. Doesn't seem to be much wrong with it. Nice work.

Your GFX looks good, the goombas, Bowser, blooper, fire, coral, and font in particular, but I don't think metal blocks or wood blocks should be used for terrain. Other than that, looks good .

This turns Super Mario Bros (JU) (PRG 0).nes into Super Mario Bros 2005 Special.nes

Yes, everybody who does this makes a Super Mario hack and you can add mine to the pile. My motivation for this was: I enjoyed hacks like the DX, MCB, Harmony and other hacks where they updated the graphics. But I wanted a makeover patch that did not change anything but the graphics- no palettes, no hex hacks, no level changes, no corruptions, just updated graphics. I also wanted one that was complete- This hack does make over pretty much the entire game, including Bowser.

I am using this simple graphics hack to mix and match with other level and functionality hacks. I started a list of simple functionality hacks that can be added here: http://jordanbieber.proboards38.com/index.cgi?board=classicgames&action=display&thread=1119724423
(Some are hard to find and Zophar doesn't really qc their list so hopefully this is a good list of good tweaks)

Hope you enjoy.
